I've been pretty disappointed in Bruce over the last several of his releases. Putting out an album a year or two just really was never his style, but that is pretty much the pace he's been on over the last several studio releases. The lyrics seem forced, and the band seems a bit rushed on this. It has some hooks and a bit of groove, but overall it doesn't send out the "working man" message like he did when I fell in love with his music as a teenager in the early 1980's. Yeah, I know, I'm probably gonna get some grief for writing this review, but this cd is just too political, too scattered and unfocused and doesn't hold a candle to the old standards of: "Born In The USA" "The Rising" or "Nebraska". But I do give Bruce and the band credit, he doesn't really need the money, and they do really seem to be having a fun time on stage when I've seen them perform live but for me the appeal has turned a bit rushed and commercialized. I wouldn't really recommend this cd to a casual listener.Read full review
This may be a bit biased, in that I am a huge Springsteen fan, in an "on-again-off-again" way. I went from 2002 to 2009 without listening to a lot of Springsteen. I knew he had issued "WOAD" just before I saw him live (first time since 1985)at Bonnaroo in June of this year. The Bonnaroo show was legendary; it is being talked about as one of the best Springsteen & the E Streeters shows in years. Bruce performed an eight minute "Outlaw Pete" and also performed "My Lucky Day" from the WOAD. The next night I purchased the CD and was well pleased. Although I love the stark albums like Nebraska and Ghost of Tom Joad, I never really jammed to the albums done without the full E Street Band. Lucky Town, Human Touch, and Magic were all good, but I felt none of the "pull you into my world" strength of The River. Woad delivers some of that, without a full E Street accompaniment. Working On A Dream is a trip into a world of cowboy fantasy, loving the checkout girl at the local supermarket, of maybe finally coming to a better, maybe a more mature understanding of love and life's future. "Tomorrow Never Knows" is a rambling, nice song, a la a folk tinged CCR. One Good Eye is another fave, a bluesy stomp rock evangelical like song, sung into an mono microphone. Great Stuff. If there absolutely HAD to be a choice made as to the least liked song, I would say that "Surprise, Surprise" is the one I tend to skip when it comes around. It is about giving a changed you to your love for their birthday, and is syrupy. The bonus track- The Wrestler, the song Springsteen wrote for the Mickey Rourke movie of the same name, is one I really like. I would love to hear it's acoustic version. Again, all in all, a great album. Not the best, but definitely different and great. Nice Job Bruce. See you in Nashville September 10!!!Read full review
Sorry to disappoint any Springsteen fans reading this now, but that's exactly how I felt after listening to this album. It's just not up to snuff with his last few albums (most notably The Rising and Magic). Too folksy in some places, and too soft in others. Very little of the traditional E-Street roadhouse sound. Only two tracks are memorable - the title track, and "Lucky Day". Save your money - download these 2 songs. Hate to write this, as I've been a fan of the Boss since the mid-80's, but I hope strongly that their next album will have more of their original sound, and more interesting story-songs all around.
Yes, My kinda music and I'm still working on my Dream!

This is Bruce Springsteen's best effort since his early Born to Run days . From the first note of Outlaw Pete til the final cut, I was rivetted to the seat. The Boss and the E Street Band posted this CD as a sort of manifesto telling all comers they are here and they are here to stay. The packaging was typical of the direction CDs are going in that it was of cardboard construction . As far as it goes the music was great and tells all who are listening that the Boss is still in charge and listen up! you might just like what you hear.
