I purchased this for "In the Steppes of Central Asia". However, the tempo is too fast, the running time being 6 min.40 sec. The grace notes in the second theme are lost because of this. The english horn has a beautiful tone, and it would have been nice to hear the piece played in a slower tempo. "Night on Bald Mountain" is also too fast, and the mix is not good. The trumpets overpower the rest of the orchestra. On the plus side, the "Polovetsian Dances" version has no chorus. Don't like the chorus. I have since purchased two more versions of these compositions. I finally have a decent recording of each, although not all on the same CD. My favorite "Steppes" is actually a tad slower than I would have liked, but I'm getting used to it. (Running time almost 8 min.) I hope you find this review helpful.Read full review
This is a good value for requisite classical pieces for any serious collection. The performances are professional and can be very engaging at times. The recording quality is good for a value item, although certainly nowhere near the top of this category.
