I originally watched this series during the hey-day of late night anime. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Blue Gender all occupied a epic 3-show time slot in Adult Swim's late night offerings. Blue Gender (along with the other 2) represented excellence in more adult oriented anime. A hapless loser Yuji wakes up in the midst of terrifying giant-bug-infested apocalypse and must grow up fast to survive this new hellish world. He is helped along by a no-nonsense, battle-hardened soldier Marlene who must drag him kicking and screaming to survival in a world populated by towering monstrosities. But it won't be easy in a world filled with untold death and almost complete destruction caused by the mysterious "Blue". Action, drama, and tragedy keep this anime gem going strong from the very beginning, with the inner conflict of not becoming a monster yourself and struggle to become fully human adding an expected amount of depth to the series. I love this series. Yes, the action and monsters are cool and the terror and tragedy keep you on your toes, but that's not what's most special about this show. It's that nagging hope under it all, that longing for a deep love and camaraderie that shouldn't make sense among the senseless violence. This feeling is best encapsulated by the ending theme song "Love Taught Me". It's a beautifully simple song and features unexpectedly deep lyrics about doubt, love, longing, and the need for inner strength. It honestly doesn't start to make sense until you approach the end of the series, but it at least serves as a needed soothing lullaby after the horror experienced in each episode. Anyway, "Love Taught Me" is one of my favorite pieces of music from an anime and the best English adaptation of a anime song that I've ever heard. It's something I always look forward to at the end of every episode. Anyway, like I said before: this anime is a hidden gem. I almost never here it mentioned among people's favorite animes, but, to this day, I still prefer to watch it alongside Trigun and Cowboy Bebop: 2 of the greatest anime series ever made. It's a truly gripping show with horror and heart and I heartily recommend it to any older anime fan who can stomach the horror side of it.Read full review

Really great older anime series. It's more serious in tone definitely an adult show, some light nudity and a really great main character relationship that changes over time. You see incredible character development and shifts in personality as the show progresses that just blow my mind. The story also is just fantastic with humans having to leave earth after r"the blue" these giant insect creatures that will eat almost everything in sight show up. Humanity is forced to live in space and only visit earth on supply runs or to find special people that have unique DNA mutations that help in the fight. The art style although dated, still holds up since it was hand drawn. If you love deep more serious animes like the death note you should really look to watch Blue Gender.
