Philip J. Riley, with the cooperation of Forrest J. Acerkman, started a series of books that gave us the best information about several lost films from the silent and early sound era. The first volume was about the first two "versions" of Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera. This epic 1925 film was first previewed in Los Angeles, cut and then repreviewed in San Francisco. Then the film had major scenes and other trimmings before "opening" in New York. No known copies of the complete Phantom is known to exist and Philip Riley with the original screenplay and a series of photos has given us a look as to what the movie originally was. He does the same with another film starring Lon Chaney, the lost A Blind Bargain. Again with the original screenplay and photos, he gives us the best look at the lost film. As far as I've been able to find out, one more volume was ever made, the recreation of Lon Chaney's London After Midnight. With the original screenplay and a ton of photos, Mr. Riley and TCM were able to recreate a version of the film that has shown on the channel several times. If you're into Lon Chaney, silent and lost films, these volumes are for you!Read full review
