I bought this phone as a back up for my newer model Blackberry. It states AT&T unlocked. I put my TMobile SIM card in, plugged the battery charger in and made my first phone call in less than 5 minutes after getting it out of the mailbox. I'll have to say...there's something to be said for old school. Though it came w/o a manual and this model doesn't have a trackball, which is the only way I've ever used a smart phone, it was sooo easy to figure out. I'll give it to my husband who is not tech savvy at all, but now he'll have a BlackBerry also (unless something happens to mine and I have to take it back). This was an awesome deal for me and it's an awesome phone. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone that's interested. Another great thing about it is the size of the keys. They are much larger than the ones on my Blackberry, making it much easier to dial numbers and text. Buy one! You won't be sorry!Read full review
I really love this for a first smartphone, due to the low price. It has all the features I was looking for. The only negative I would say is the main trackwheel and control for the phone, being on the side, where you normally hold the phone. This gets in the way of using it. When you pull it out of its holster, the trackwheel is right there in the way. It is rather large, but I knew that going in, and this doesnt affect how well i like or dislike it however. I'm very happy with my Blackberry Rim.
I purchase these all the time. Primarily they are used for my business. I like being able to purchase them for pennies on the dollar when compared with newer technology. We provide road side assistance like changing tires, jump starting vehicles etc. My techs abuse them but they hold up fairly well. We don't need new technology just rugged and economical communications devices. These are about as close as you get to meeting those requirements. I have noticed some issues with them when they are not unlocked properly. I have seen more than my share of "searching for network" indications on some of them. Mostly that would track back to the person or company doing the unlocking. Overall they are a solid product, I just wish they were bullett proof!
I bought this device because it came with new or slightly used peripheral equipment, and the price was very competitive. As well, I'd accumulated enough ebay master card credits to bring the total price down even more. :-) But economic value aside, I liked the fact that I could read the screen better at a glance than I had been doing with my Sony Ericsson. Mind you, my Blackberry is dated, and there are some clearly distinctive feature missing in comparison to later generations. But, its rugged and reliable nature have earned far more points with me than any bells or whistles to be found on younger devices. I'm a happy customer because of it.
The RIM BlackBerry 7290 is still a good cell phone. If you are not trying to "keep up with the Jones'" and need a great reliable cell phone by a manuafacturer rate #1 in messaging capability; then consider 2007 to 2009 models that still get the job done. Keep a few extra dollars in your pocket by resisting features on newer phones that you may never use. Not against the new models; however this feedback is for those who are considering the RIM BlackBerry 7290.
