This is a realistic view of a Jazz musician's life. An extraordinary person, Charlie "Yardbird" Parker, his life, loves, wife, Chan and the tragic story of his losses capturing his coping mechanisms in the world of Jazz, predjudice, broad changes, deep frustration and substance abuse. Forest Whitaker was superb in the role of Bird, as was Diane Venora as his strong, understanding, faithful and brilliant wife. I had it in VHS, but the tape was worn out and I hated to lose it so I ordered it through Half.com and am extremely pleased. I have already watched it twice since I received it! Great flick! Powerful! Dynamic! Superbly directed by Clint Eastwood, a fervent Jazz listener and lover (as am I), this based-on-real-life drama blends the original solo recordings of the music of Charlie Parker with modern musicians creating a living soundtrack that won a Best Sound Academy Award, as well as, Best Director Golden Globe Award (Clint Eastwood), Cannes Film Festival Best Actor performance by Forest Whitaker, and the New York Film Critics Best Supporting Actress for Diane Venora. If you have never seen this epic story, especially if you love Jazz and Charlie Parker's wayout horn dynamics, you will love this movie! The music is grand and exciting! You will not be disappointed. It is a part of our wonderful music heritage.Read full review
Bird is a sensational film, well.acted, well.directed, an all around good film. His autobiographical story sets the tone for the movie, he was a pioneer for the jazz industry. His.tragic.abuse of drugs and alcohol.was his downfall. He died.at a very young age. .

Clint Eastwood directs Forest Whitaker in this Biopic of the famed saxophone player, Charlie Parker. Addicted to drugs from a young age, Parker suffered the corresponding highs and lows. Supported by his loving wife Chan, who resisted attempts to have him placed in a mental institution, he continued to play his new style of music, revolutionizing jazz. Superb and true to the real story. A must for all Jazz fans. Especially, those who are learning about the origins of "Be-Bop"
"Bird" strikes me as being an overly sympathetic view of the life and times of Charlie Parker. But this was clearly a labor of love for Mr. Eastwood, whose devotion to his subject shines through the fog that shrouded the man but not his music. The film's genre isn't generally noted for quality writing and acting, but I gotta believe that "Bird" is as good as it gets (or, perhaps more accurately, as good as it's gotten to date).
Best docudrama of jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker.
