this compilation, in particular, is probably the best place to start for anyone new to billy bragg, or who have only a vague familiarity. all the "hits" and well-known tracks are here, and then some. the 3-disc limited edition is especially nice for the enthusiast, and possible for the more casual fan, as well. billy doesn't possess what one would consider a technically nice singing voice (though it has grown and changed over time), but he's a writer, performer, activist, and some might even say, a comedian (in his own way). this snazzy little compilation is just another example of the value of rhino records in the world of music. i won't compare billy to other singer/songwriters, even to his stated heroes or his famous fans. i don't think that's terribly useful most of the time. if you're a fan of folk, check him out. if you're a pop fan, check him out. if you're a fan of intelligent british "indie" music, check him out. if you're a budding or accomplished guitar player, check him out. whatever your own reasons, over these many years, i've grown to love and respect his work, his activism and the man himself. i wish i could claim to truly know him personally, but i can only say that having met him and interacted with him many times, i think he's one of the great lights in a world full of dim bulbs.Read full review
