Ok, you got me, I pre-ordered this because John Krasinski from the office is in it. Anyways this didn't disappoint. Although some parts seemed a bit sluggish and how they manage to find the money to go touring around the country and off to Canada.. paying for plane and train tickets not to mention rental cars and hotel rooms when in the beginning it exemplifies how poor they are. However, there are stranger things in this world to wonder about. The movie is stuffed to the brim with awesome feel good moments. So many segments in this had me hitting the rewind so I could watch it over again it was so hilarious. Utilization of the "F" bomb is freely used.. soo.. might not want to sit back with the sunday bible study and watch this.
This road trip movie is a journey into discovery. John Krasinski plays Burt and Maya Rudolph plays Verona, who, in anticipation of a new baby, begin a journey together to find a new place to call home. This pregnancy movie is about nesting, not about birthing. There are no hospital delivery scenes in this movie. It is about finding not only a place to call home, but finding out what home means. They travel to Phoenix, Tucson, Madison, Montreal, and Miami visiting people they know in these cities. They soon discover how much they have grown together as a couple and how much they have grown apart from their old friends. These discoveries are tender, heartwarming, and somewhat painful, but the zaniness of the characters they meet on the road trip keeps the humor in the movie and prevents it from being melodramatic. The scene with the airport ticket agent is hilarious and very real. The only problem I have with this movie is the way they dress Burt. I guess it is an attempt to portray his individuality, but it is a bit too distracting at times. They do a better job with Verona's wardrobe which reflects the changes in the character during the pregnancy. My wife and I are grandparents now, not newlyweds like the couple in the movie, but the movie resonated with us because we took that same journey in the past. As they say; been there, done that. One scene in the movie that really struck a cord with me was where they were tired from their travels and were beginning to run out of places and friends to visit and were beginning to wonder if they could ever find a place to call home. In this scene they ask each other, "Is it us?" It is this self doubt and fear that keeps this very funny movie well grounded and real. This movie is laugh-out-loud funny and quietly sad. It will take your emotions on a journey of discovery with Burt and Verona. It is a journey worth taking.Read full review
This is not really a comedy—at least I think so. Maya Rudolph is serious here—didn’t expect that. Enjoyed it—John Krazinski was great here.
Verified purchase: Yes | Condition: Pre-owned
I purchased this movie because I love both John Krasinksi and Maya Rudolph. I was not disappointed! They have great on-screen chemistry and successfully pull off the ups and downs of the modern relationship without being too mushy. Actually, I was laughing for most of the movie. The humor is subtle and sometimes heart-warming at the same time. John and Maya are the perfect castmates, and the supporting cast (Maggie Gyllenhaal, Catherine O'Hara, Allison Janney) are simply amazing as well. I don't think they could have casted the film any better if they tried. Also, I need to mention the music. The soundtrack selections are wonderful and fit the mood/tone of the film very well. Overall, this is an exceptional movie that I would highly recommend to my friends and family and has become a new favorite of mine.Read full review
Well acted, excellent chemistry between the lead actors, funny screenplay, mellow, all round quality film making. If you like Garden State, Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers you'll like this.
