Murder mysteries are definitely not my first love as far as book catergories go, but Nancy Atherton manages to make it not only fun to "find out" but grips you right from the very beginning. Aunt Dimity's Death I believe is book one of the series and basically the story is seen through Lori Shepard's eyes as each story unfolds. In this book Lori is summoned to the law offices of Willis & Willis only to find out that Dimity Westwood or "Aunt Dimity" in her childhood stories is in fact real and not fictional and has just recently died. The mystery begins as Lori must fly to Dimity's cottage in Finch, England and spend a month there going through her old letters. Attached was an old photo and a letter from her Mother requesting that Lori find out what secret past trauma haunted Dimity. To Lori's chagrin she must go accompanied by Bill Willis to aide her search. He seems to annoy her at every turn! The reader will get lost in the tale and will not be willing to put the book down till the very end. A very promising mystery series. 4 stars ****Read full review
In the story, Lori and Bill's efforts to discover the secret behind Aunt Dimity's spirit staying behind was well worth their quest. As a child Lori's mom would make up "Aunt Dimity" stories for her and Bill visited an "Aunt Dimity" in England when he was smaller and she told him stories about one day meeting a girl named Lori. It began like a Cinderella story, a few years after Lori's mom died and she was broke with little to get by on. She received a strange letter asking that she meet with this lawyer. No reason was given. It plays out like a fairy tale after that. Bill and his dad are the wealthy lawyers that have been taking care of Aunt Dimity's estate after her death. Aunt Dimity was Lori's mom's best friend during WWII. Lori's mom was stationed in London and met Dimity and their friendship lasted through her coming home to America, but she never told Lori that Dimity was real....but the crazy stories about Dimity's adventures were very real. The whole story was similar to a treasure hunt with the beautiful English background as the setting. I guess stories like this prove that love can conquer all. Very charming, a real delight! I could hardly put the book down!Read full review
