The AT Pro25 is not a comparable to mics like the Beta 52 or D112, but it does have its place. I got mine for $45 including shipping which I feel is a good buy! Do not buy it expecting a really high end kick mic, but for those working on a bit of a budget, it is a great alternative. I would always choose a d112 over the pro25 but with certain placements it sounds not too bad at all. Placed inside the kick drum, I found it very difficult to obtain a useable sound, but placed outside the kick, the sound is much better than other bargain mics. And at different distances outside the kick, you can obtain some different sounds. When first starting out, I purchased a really cheap Apex125 kick mic. The Apex could withstand being placed inside the kick pointed at the shell, at a distance of 3 inches or so and get a fairly "metal" sound, and outside the kick at about 9 inches to obtain less "click", but that was about it, but it had a lot of white noise added to the sound. Although the Pro25 is hard to position inside the kick and get a good sound, the sounds from in front of the kick were much cleaner and much more useable. And you can always add a second mic (perhaps a sm57 on the side of the shell) to obtain the "click". Another benefit of this mic however is, since it is designed for a kick drum, it does a pretty good job on the floor tom. And due to its small size and built in clip, it is pretty easy to position on the kit. Another positive for this mic as a tom mic, is that it is a "hypercardioid" so it will pick up a little more from the sides than a cardioid, so you can position it BETWEEN toms, to use one mic for 2 floor toms (if necessary). Yet another benefit that makes this mic worth owning, is that it does a really good job on a guitar cabinet. Again, since it's designed for high SPLs and bass, it can give a really thick and full sound, even on something thick and chunky like a Les Paul on a Marshall stack (yet equally as good if you trade out the Les Paul for a typically "metal" Ibanez). One negative is that the clip is built in, so if the clip breaks or something you've got a bit of a problem. At $50 I would definitely buy it again. As a a bit of a bargain kick mic it does a pretty good job, and once I can afford to upgrade to a d112 or beta52, I'll have a pretty decent floor tom mic, and real nice guitar cab mic. Any mic that does a decent-to-good job in more than one place is a mic worth owning if the price is right as far as I'm concerned. Just don't spend TOP dollar and expect a TOP end kick mic. Good sound, I think it´s in the same league that the standard bass drum microphones. Rugged construction. Nice to have.
