I wanted to make sure I read Atonement before I saw the movie because the book is always so much richer than the adaptation for the screen. I found this book a bit slow going for about the first one hundred pages but then the story started the develop and I found it much more interesting. In the end, I found this to be a profoundly sad book. I suppose a happy ending isn’t always realistic and this one did not offer that simple solution to complicated lives. I did enjoy this book but felt such a feeling of loss at the end that I needed to seek out something much lighter to read next. I am looking forward to the movie in seeing what parts are true to the book and what parts are changed. The writing style of Ian McEwan is detailed and lyrical. The detail in the novel gave it a beauty that surpassed the ending.Read full review
The story delves into the mind of a 13 year old girl and her immature,selfish,short-sighted, and self-motivating mindset that provoked her to inappropriately misreport her viewing of an event-the result of which destroyed much of the lives of two people. It is slow reading at first that picks up after the first third;resulting in my recommending the book. The movie will probably be a better event than the book because the nature of the story line will allow it to have a smoother flow than the book.
This story set back in the time of World War Two is extremely touching and reveals how falsely accusing someone especially at a very young age can destroy so many lives. It's also amazing how a teenage girl of 15 can can already at that age know how to manipulate a situations for the sake of greed and future wealth and security. I hope I have not given away too much. I just feel that there should be a sequil and see what happens the the young accuser through out the rest of her life. I would be delighted to read it.
The plot of the story doesn't come into play until you are MORE than halfway through the book. Very slow-going...wasn't very fun getting to the plot. I generally love long, boring books...and movies. Drives my friends and family nuts. Even so, this book just didn't do it for me. I'm very disappointed, as I've heard good reviews. I have no interest in seeing the movie now either, although I'm sure it would get to the point a lot faster!
Wanted to read it before seeing the movie which didn't work. So I then knew what all the characters looked like as I was reading it. The movie expanded on diaries and letters in the book and the written story had more detail about other events. So it is worth reading and seeing Atonement.
