Early Macbook Air. 2008. Dual Core Intel Processor. 2GB RAM. Still a very capable computer. The one I bought came with Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard). You could get along very well with that. I had a USB disc drive (Apple Superdrive) and Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install discs ( you could probably find both on eBay ) and upgraded the operating system. With OS 10.6 installed I was able to download a free upgrade to the latest Mac OS (currently Yosemite 10.10.5) and it works perfectly. I am using the computer for email and web browsing. Even with only 2GB RAM, it is wonderfully fast and a pleasure to work on. It is light, well built. It detected my wireless printer (Brother) and took seconds to add it to the system. You could easily download required applications. I use an Internet Security/Virus Protection program (Norton) and and Text Editor (Pages). The 120 GB hard drive is plenty for my needs. Looking to the future, the battery is good and is user replaceable, and the hard drive can also be upgraded. The biggest limitation will probably be the non-upgradeable 2GB RAM. You could get a newer Macbook Air with more RAM (for more money) but I think this computer will serve my requirements for a good long time.Read full review

I did a lot of research prior to buying the MacBook Air. I was looking for a highly portable device to use when traveling away from my MacPro Desktop. I wanted to stay with an Apple product and the New iPad seemed to be the perfect choice.....Until I really understood the many limitations of this new device. My equipment requirements were as follows, light, powerful, ability to access the web, write email, and most importantly work with spreadsheets, Word Docs and Powerpoints. It all came down to the MacBook Air. A perfect fit. I hear many people complaining about the lack of a DVD drive. Folks....Really, how often do you use the DVD drive on your laptop? When traveling now a days, who wants to carry around physical DVD movies in addition to their laptops? Just download them to the HD via iTunes and you are on your way! If you need to load a program onto the MBA the "AirDrive" function works great! This works by wirelessly linking any Mac or PC CD/DVD drive to the MBA. If you absolutely need a DVD drive you can buy an external MBA external DVD SuperDrive for another $50.00 - $99.00 off eBay. The battery life is amazing! Like all new MacBook laptops the battery is built in and not user changeable. I was able to pull 6 hours of use from a full charge during a recent trip. The screen quality and graphics is incredibly clear and the colors are amazing! The best performance feature of all is the 128GB SSD hard drive. This may be a more expensive option but well worth the money given the fact that it offers almost "Instant On" loading once you hit the start button. The SSD is extremely quiet, runs cool and uses far less power to run than a conventional disc based hard drive. Bottom line... If you want a great portable Mac to use as a satellite connection when away from you more powerful Desktop then you can't ask for a better option than the MacBook Air! Go for it! You will not be disappointed!Read full review
This is my first Macbook and I now have the air and a pro. The air is lightweight and great to use. I like the backlit keyboard for writing on the plane while everyone else sleeps on those ocean crossing flights. The battery life is nearly four hours, which is pretty good for travel usage. While it is more expensive than most netbooks, you are getting a real powerhouse. I recommend the Super Drive as there is no optical drive onboard. The built in bluetooth is great for adding a mouse or pairing to download pictues from your bluetooth enabled phone. I am not a gamer, so I can't give any advice on how the system work to play games. I do ike the dual boot capability, my air can boot to Windows 7 also, though I have never used this feature. I watched a movie using the super drive recently and was impressed at the sound quality through the onboard speakers. I must admit, that I have used Skype a few times and like the interface on Macs better than PCs. The Skype calls on the Mac seem to have better picture quality and stays connected to fluky international providers better. Did I mention that virus attacks on Macs are rare? I highly recommend instead of a netbook.Read full review
I love this thing, I no DJ or game, this is the perfect student laptop super lightweight, I had to reinstall the OS, read the manual did not realize you can share the DVD/CD drive of another Mac or PC to do a remote install of the OS as long as they are in the same network! how cool is that, we truly are living in a wireless work with netflix I really don't need a DVD drive. This is my first mac its so easy to use, I will never go back to PC, anything you can do in PC can be done in mac
My needs involve home and college use. I write a lot, browse the internet frequently, and take my laptop almost everywhere. The Macbook Air suits my needs perfectly. In spite of the naysayers, who talk about slower speed and other perceived shortcomings they may see with this laptop, It has been the perfect choice for me. I would recommend the Air for anyone in a similar situation. Of course, MAC RULES!
