Apple invested a lot of effort in the design and development of the Mac Pro tower series of machines (e.g. Mac Pro 1,1 through 5,1). Even some 6 years later, the design is still valid and remains highly configurable and receptive to many late-breaking upgrades. I was able to upgrade the unit I purchased on eBay with very fast M.2 SSD drives via PCIE adapters, enabling very high read and write speeds for the main system drive. The processors had already been upgraded to a pair of hexacore 3.06 Ghz Xeons, enough power to do heavyweight scientific computing, video editing and other processor-intensive tasks. USB 2.0 can be updated to 3.0 with cost-effective cards on the market. Buy a used Mac Pro 2009-2012 machine today and you will be very happy!

This is the tower of power. Once you add a SSD and install the OS (weather Mac OS X or Windows or both as in my case), this machine screams of performance. Starts fast, runs fast, and too big and heavy for anyone to hide under their coat and walk off with. Upgrading is super easy. Flip a lever and the side of the computer opens exposing everything. The ports in the front of the Mac Pro make it convenient to connect peripherals. The Apple Engineers really thought of everything. With the ability to easily upgrade, storage, media drives, video card, and even the CPU; this machine will have years of great performance for what ever you need it for.

I have owned Mac 9600's, G3's, G4's and G5's. I just got a Mac Pro and I love it. You can put four hard drives in it, including the faster solid state drives. You can add a solid state drive connected to a PCI card that is even faster still. I have 64 GB RAM which is wonderful for Photoshop. I have two video cards and an audio card installed and still have an empty PCI slot. The twin processors are as fast as my new iMac but with two of them working I can do a ton of stuff at once-a lot of open applications, a lot of open pictures in Photoshop. Through all the generations of Mac computers I have enjoyed stuffing them full of faster hard drives, more RAM, lots of PCI cards. You can stuff more stuff into this Mac than any of them. It's even simple to upgrade the processor-just slide the old one out and the new one in. I love it. If you are the kind who likes to upgrade and tinker with your computer you will love this Mac. And it still runs Apple's current operating system. I have no complaints with this computer.Read full review

It’s faster and much quieter than the 8 Core 3.0 2,1 that it replaced. It also runs much cooler. And the older-style towers like this are definitely a better deal than the new Mac Pros, not just because of the price - but because they have more features and means of expansion (PCI slots would be a major loss). Yosemite has a little to add compared to Snow Leopard. It is compatible with newer software (Logic Pro X runs great) and is very pretty, in a less-bubbly and more OS9ish kind of way. Overall, this is an impressive machine which will provide many years of service.
