I recommend the 2008 Mac Pro as the "bottom line" used Apple workstations. One major area to be concerned with is staying current with the OS. The 2008 Mac Pro boots into the 64 bit EFI and can upgrade to El Capitan. You can even install 64 bit versions of Windows. Hardware wise this thing is a beast at 8 Xeon cores. Upgradable memory to 32gb, hard drive upto 4tb additional super drive, video card and pci card extras. Picked mine up for less than $400 and easily a better value and more powerful than any new PC in the same price class.

Truthfully, if you cannot get by on 8 3Ghz cores(upgradeable to 12 3.2 Ghz cores) & 32GBs(upgradeable to 64GBs) of RAM with unlimited videocard options via eBay(with some of the newest, fastest GPU chipsets) in either the music or television/ movie industry, then you are truly doing something wrong. Yea, these cases are big... but unless you are in a 100sq. ft. mini house or enjoy overpaying for the newer, smaller Mac Pros at $4000+... there is no reason to buy the newer machines. I am running OSX El Capitans latest offering and have Sierra ready to install(all that you need is a Bluetooth 4.0/ Wireless AC card that can be had for less than $100). The system has USB 2.0 and Sata II native, though you can buy and install a USB 3/ Sata III card for less than $50 and kill two birds with one stone. Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 cards can also be installed, if needed, too. Along with 12Gb SAS. I work in the music industry and had been using a 4 core 4Ghz i7 with 16GBs of RAM for years and never ran out of speed or had issues running a dozen music related apps. I bougt this system for the ease of use that is associated with Mac products. No longer am I fighting just to get an app running or issues with new or old hardware... I just download, install and it works. With hardware, you just install and most everything just works without the need to download drivers. These systems are easy, safe(no viruses, no mallware or spyware) and can be used direct with your modem, as a router(Macs automatically issue ips to any wired or wireless clients it detects and you can set logins and passwords, along with security features, as easily as any router on the market. Basically, an all-in-one for all of your computing needs. Without the need for any external componenets. Just plug and play, in the easiest sense imaginable. I cannot say enough good things about the Macintosh computing environment. If you are tired of having to fight with your Windows machine everytime you want to use or install hardware or software... the Mac is your savior. The only downfall I see, is that if you are a gamer... not all games are coded for Mac. Though it continues to get better. You will not get a better power per dollar machine, especially if you are looking Microsofts way. There is a reason why almost all industry professionals use, and have for years, Apple computers. They work and are the fastest on the planet, without having to jump through hoops everytime you want to do something.Read full review

At roughly $300 for the 3.2Ghz 8 core model, and after reading the description that said "may include severe dents and cracks" I was more than pleasantly surprised when it arrived in excellent condition, a few scratches but nothing dramatic, and not a single dent or crack to the case at all. It was a little dusty inside. But I cleaned it out, installed an SSD and a WIFI card and it's working and looking excellent. Highly recommended!

I bought this to replace a desktop G-5 that was purchased in 2005 for 2600 bucks!. Unfortunately , however, Apple doesn't allow for upgrades to the computer processor and as your computer becomes outdated the only option is to either sell it for a pittance, give it away or trash it. So much for Apple's "Green" activity. So I needed an Intel machine and this was the least expensive option. My old G-5 works just fine (congratulations Apple) but I'm, of course unable to upgrade anything ...like Browsers etc. This one works fine ...with few problems, though there a re a few. Like. For example, I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 and CS 3 upgrade A LOT. These older versions of Photoshop fullfill all my needs but Adobe doesn't support CS2 any longer and my CS2 is the full retail pack with the CS3 upgrade...and I can't load it on the Intel Mac. I guess I have to buy a whole new package of CS3 or CS4 after spending about five hundred bucks on the previous versions. THANKS A LOT ADOBE...now my least favorite company! No problems with this MacPro though.Read full review
I've never been spoiled when it comes to good computers, so just remember to keep in mind that these are older devices! That being said, there's a lot of potential with one of these as long as you throw in some extra RAM, a better video card, and an SSD drive (so I've heard, waiting on mine). I've had several Windows pc's (mostly laptops) over the past decade, and for one reason or another, my experience has mostly always been frustrating. I used Macs for a few classes back in high school and always admired the simplistic, clean layout and often smoother experiences riddled with way fewer error messages than Windows, from Vista to 10 have plagued me with. I'm sure a lot of it came from the quality of the laptops I had back then, but they were around the price that this puppy ran me at. What I'm getting at, is this: if you're a Windows user looking to try out the OS X side of life, start with something like this. Way more affordable than the exorbitant, ridiculous "premium" price tags Apple greedily incorporates. Love the hardware; despise the company!Read full review
