It's now mid-2015, and I just bought a 2011 MacBook Pro. Why? 1. The last of the 17" screens, mine has the optional anti-glare. If you do anything Adobe on the laptop, you need all the space you can get for the many menus and toolbars. 2. Apple hardware is pricey off the shelf, but lasts a long time. I can finally afford this machine, which I've wanted since it was introduced, and can realistically expect years of use to come. 3. The now-discontinued Unibody design allows opening the bottom: Previous owner installed SSD drive and maxed out the RAM. If something breaks down, there is a fighting chance to go in and fix it, as I have done with other Macs, iMacs and MacBooks. New models have gone to a thinner profile, but no user access is possible, even to replace the battery. 4. The last MacBook line to include a DVD drive, and the first to have a Thunderbolt port alongside the Firewire, USB and Ethernet. 5. The first generation to use perfected quad-core i7 processors. Drawbacks: 1. Heavier than the new, sleek 15-inchers. No problem for me, but harder to pick up with the fingertips of one hand. 2. Less battery time than current models, and at this age, I will have to replace the battery in a year or two.Read full review
The 17-inch Macbook Pro is a great laptop. Maxed out with 16gb of RAM and running off an SSD drive make it a very fast machine. The screen size and graphics are good stuff, too. Some of these machines can occasionally run on the hot side but using a utility program to manually control fan speeds helps a great deal in keeping operating temperatures under control. All in all, this machine is a good value.

Yes, Macbook Pros are more expensive then PCs. You want to know why? It's because they are a perfect balance of power and efficiency. Not only can this handle everything I throw at it, but it has the ability to withstand punishment from a power user and maintain a fabulous battery life in the process. This computer only requires a 85W power adapter and can last a good 7 hours with moderate screen brightness. Apple doesn't put junk in their computers. Even if you get a base model it's still going to be far ahead of what you'd receive in a PC computer and it's going to last. This computer will maintain it's value for years to come and the components are so solid that I won't need to worry about anything going wrong and it will ALWAYS work. Yes, I'm still going to buy AppleCare for it. That's because I love Apple and don't mind giving them more of my money for my peace of mind. Do yourself a favor and get a real computer. Buy an Apple.Read full review
The heaviest work I do on computers is video editing and design. I ordered this laptop from having a HP Pavilion DV4 1080es, which barely could handle the software I use (Premiere, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator CS5) and the leap in performance from one to another is indescribable. Simple to use. Simple to get used to, even when you've only worked on PCs. REALLY REALLY FAST. I'll throw out some numbers as I get deeper into video editing with it. This one has a glossy hi-res resolution (all 17"s only comes with hi-res displays). I have a friend who bought the 13-inch glossy which comes with ONLY normal resolution and you can definitely tell the difference in terms of sharpness, contrast and so on... But again, the 13-inch with a normal screen has better picture output than most laptops I've seen. I'm only picky on this because I need it for work. If I had to choose with a low budget on mind and not having to work on what I do, I would have gone with the 13-inch or the 15-inch without this upgrade, saving a couple of hundreds. I'm insanely happy with my choice. I highly recommend it IF you need to work on graphics, because the downside of course is that is highly expensive when compared to other brands and models out there.Read full review
my friend has a MacBook Pro 17 and I really liked the large screen. When I found this one, I thought at first it was a little over priced, but once I read about the upgrades that came with the MBP 17, I bought it. Plus a $100 coupon from eBay helped. This computer came with upgraded memory, a 1TB HDD, Parallels 7 with Windows 7, Office 2011, a full Adobe Suite, including Photoshop, and more software than I have room to mention. I was able to upgrade Parallels 7 to V10, and upgraded the OS to Mavericks 10.9. This computer is really great, speedy, and tons of software bundles. The only problem was the computer base itself. It looks like it had some damage at some time in the past. But that has not affected the performance in any way.
