W. J. G. Ord-Hume is one of the world's experts on mechanical music machines; pianos, music boxes, organs, etc. He is a meticulous historian and often entertaining writer as well. This large volume tells you just about everything there is to know on the subject of automatic (self-playing) organs; their history from ancient to modern, information about their makers, how they work, etc. Ord-Hume has an amazing depth of knowledge and experience in this field. He is occasionally a bit cranky about the errors of others, but even then with an enjoyable grace. The book includes numerous photographs of instruments, including a nice color section, and detailed drawings of how things function. If you have an interest in this topic, this is an essential reference for your library. I should note that you will find the occasional typographical error the publisher has not caught. For some reason this seems to be a common failing of low volume specialty books.Read full review
Un livre exceptionnel qui reste à ma portée puisque mon modeste anglais me permet d'en apprécier l'essentiel, ce qui n'est pas possible dans une autre langue. Monsieur Ord-Hume est extraordinaire de culture et de compétence. Remarquable.
