An invigorating read from an author with a life of teaching (and) philosophy. The story feels true and moves with insight and visual description without dwelling on the negative. The race to Berlin and an end to war in Europe from a very young man's passenger seat without the knowledge that it could end with life and light and safety. The story happened to this man and he shares and relives it with humanity and honor. Too short. Yet, had his experience taken more time, and more time to tell, the book may never have made it to paper. It's the story of many young men and especially of the children tasked with becoming the men who survived, and, those who did not.I enjoyed the author's story and the flow of his writing.

"Another River, Another Town" was captivating and informative from cover to cover. John Irwin, the author, did an amazing job of describing the experience of a young man coming of age and being thrust into the horrors of tank combat in Europe towards the end of World War II. My only regret is that I didn't discover the book 10 years sooner and obtain a copy for my Dad to read. He was a decorated tank commander who sometimes struggled answering questions about his WWII experiences. This book would have been a blessing for him. I could not put it down!

Many veterans write their life and combat in WWII. This is an excellent story, and moves fast. Interesting take during the fall of Germany. He went into combat from the first March 1945 until Germany surrendered. And things shortly after the war too, when combat men just wanted to go home, but had to stay for a few months. Excellent. They face a tank driver who drinks too much. Shrapnel kills another. A good shot from a Sherman take a sprocket off a huge German tank destroyer, and the Germans bail. Using tracers to sight the main 76mm gun in the Sherman. And at the end, they get into the most modern tank America made, right in the last month of the war.

This autobiography does an outstanding job of conveying life in a U.S. Army tank unit - much better than the film FURY did. The young man grows up in a hurry when sent as a replacement gunner on an M4 Sherman. He and his tank mates received an M26 Pershing tank late in the war with the barest of training to operate this new vehicle.

This book gave a personal look at the war through the eye's of a tank gunner. The accounts let to see what the gunner was feeling and experiencing without getting into the real grusome details of wat. It made you feel like you were standing thre watching the war. Good account of the battle for Ruhr Valley. Also detaled was the liberating of a concentration camp. One down side is that the book does not mention what armored division the author was in, just that he was in the 3rd army.
