Of courese, this is the prequel to the Anne of Green Gables series. Anybody who is a follower of the series will want this to add to their collection. The little girl in the title role is believable. She's so good, you have to remind yourself that Megan Fellows didn't go back in time to play the young Anne Shirley in this production. Green Gables and Maplehurst, along with many of the houses and buildings in this series, can be found in and around Toronto, ONT, Canada. My niece and I are such followers that we traveled up Toronto for the thrill of seeing the actual set locations ourselves. It was a thrill. The movie is pretty good and certainly explains a lot. In addition, it starts out when Anne's much older and although most of the movie is in "reflection," it also brings closure in Anne's future. Seeing the original Anne of Green Gables and the sequel's Anne of Avonlea and The Continuing Story are, in my opinion, necessary to make this prequel mean something. I bought this DVD as a Christmas gift for the niece who traveled up to Toronto with me. At the time of the trip, this movie had not yet made it's TV debut in 2008.Read full review
The Anne of Green Gables series is slower-paced and Canadian-based, not the highly active or high budget films that most people have come to expect nowadays. I fell in love with the storyline (not so much the presentation) of the series in general. The acting for the series was always about a B- level. This film is no different, so don't buy it if you're expecting otherwise. The film has an annoying flashback-type presentation (based in the present when Anne is middle-aged and flashing back to the past). The girl that plays the young Anne is adorable but the other characters and boring. That being said, I highly recommend this movie as an addition to any Anne of Green Gables collection. I never read the books to the series, so this particular movie explains what happened to Anne before she arrived at Green Gables and after wards. It changed the way I watched the entire series because it changed the way that I saw Anne.Read full review
No insult intended to Barbara Hershey's acting ability, or her own fame as a celebrity ... but, what we never understood, and still do not understand, is that when the person who played Anne as both a child and young adult is still alive, why not get the same casting? Movie producers tend to think that the viewing audience doesn't notice or won't care about changes to well known characters, plot lines, or story arcs, etc. But, the die-hard viewers always do, and usually become disenchanted with a Franchise or Brand (if you will) when their considerations are not seriously considered. As far as Kevin Sullivan is concerned, he should know better. Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't... But, we lost interest not after, but during, the 3rd installment of his Anne of Green Gables / Anne of Avonlea Trilogy. Firstly, they waited way too long to film it, took too many liberties, and quite simply ran rough-shod over the story's potential. We had a party of family and friends gathered to watch it's premiere, and by the first half hour, most had lost interest and began heading home... sound familiar? Whether this particular production is good or great or noteworthy as a stand-alone offering, the individual viewer will have to make that judgment for themselves. We appreciated the long-running Tales of Avonlea TV series, as a way of introducing more folks from the area, but still were confused as to why some of the other more prominent characters from the Anne movies weren't occasionally re-introduced into the seeming daily life of the town and region. We could go on and on, but here's the short of it: when they called it "A New Beginning" ... they weren't kidding, in more ways than one. Read full review
