I got this book so that I could find some of the more obscure symbols in relation to lore and supernatural beliefs, but I got no such luck. The book is VERY good for telling what the more common symbols mean and where they come from, however, so if you want a general-knowledge book then this will hit all of the most prevalent symbols for you. Things like the cross, the swastika, and water are all explained in here. It reads as though it were an encyclopedia, and it only has a few reference pictures on each page or two. DO NOT purchase if you want something to entertain you, something to pick tattoos from, or something to get obscure pagan lore from. All-in-all, not a bad purchase, just not really what I was looking for.
It was good but I would have prefered more photos on symbols and less writting. I bought it as I wanted to use it to find ideas of picture for a tattoo. It didnt have enough photos therefore I couldnt find one. However it still is a good book.
This a dictionary of historical symbology from multiple regional areas of the world. It is a good reference tool and an appropriate primer for those interested in the subject. It is not a philosophical treatise of cross cultural symbolism - rather a concise and abbreviated encyclopedia. Black and white photos; small print; good initial reference tool that scrathes the surface of the subject of symbology.
