As fate would have it, two people using other people's tickets on a cruise ship from Europe to New York, have an encounter that changes both of their lives. The handsome playboy Nicky Ferrante (Cary Grant) meets the gorgeous former night-club singer Terry McKay (Deborah Kerr). Even though both of them are in committed relationships, their romance begins. McKay is supposed to return to resume being a tycoon's mistress. Ferrante is supposed to be traveling to meet his fiancée: heiress of 1 of the largest inheritances in the US. There & then they'll decide if they'll get married. Fate intervenes again, after 1 of them has a debilitating accident that prevents them from meeting as planned.
