This album will define Johnny Cash. The first song "The Man Comes Around" is rich and dark and beautiful--about Jesus coming back. I can't get enough of this song. Johnny's rendition of "Hurt" is bound to be a classic. Again, I have a hard time not thinking of the song in a given day. This album just kind of gets down in your soul and doesn't let go. It is a definate departure from the older country style cash. Here you will find folk, southern gospel with a dark component and heart-wrenching renditions of several very well written songs by other artists. I'm afraid that Johnny sort of eclipses the original versions and blows them out of the water. If you can only get one of Johnny Cash's last albums, this should probably be on top of your list. However, I'm guessing you will want some of the other American albums after one listen too this one. You'll probably want album V and VI after you listen to this one.Read full review
If you love Johnny Cash you will love this CD. Many songs on the CD are not his usual genre. It is a soulful collection of songs whose theme is death, loneliness and enlightenment. His aging voice adds depth to the notes and words. The DVD "Hurt" is a heartwrenching insight to the man, his pain, and especially the lose of his wife, June Carter Cash. This CD has become one of my most played discs.
Mode and NIN did cover songs on Hurt and Personal Jesus. They are both on this album. I also feel that this album has some very good songs that express feelings, hardship and circumstances that most music today are unsuccessful of doing. I rank this album as good, though very good, it was not enough for excellent. If this CD is on sale, grab it!
Out of all of Johnny's albums, this one is my favorite. Most of the songs are covers but this seems to be the culmination of Johnny's life and career. I listen to the first two songs over and over again. What a way to finish strong.

Fantastic CD...raw Johnny Cash at the end of his life, I guess. I love the title song. I wake up with the lyrics in my head and the guitar is fabulous. The cowboy songs and the older songs I love also. Johnny puts an "every man" spin on them. Great, great CD. I'm so glad I got it. The only thing I dislike about this CD is that "the man" is no longer here.
