Interesting book on Lionel trains. It not only covers the history of Lionel but the author covers why, at least I, love trains so much. My father scrimped and sacrificed for months, every year to add to our Lionel board each Christmas. But, then, we were together for hours, even months, together with them. I don't love the trains as much as I loved him, and I'm doing the same for my children. This book tells of that, and the possible opposite effect. The Lionel business was all to it's founder. When the business side took over J. Lionel Cohen's life the same trains that brought us together, took him from his children, sad. This is a side of the Lionel story that is rarely covered. I've never heard it before. PS Yes I still have our originals, and maybe more importantly the original catalogs we dreamed over. Learn from this book and good luck with telling your children you love them, maybe they will pass the love and the trains on too.Read full review
This is an excellent history of Lionel Trains and Joshua Lionel Cowen, its creator and founder. Although the book is dated, it brings the reader up into the mid-70's. For those of us who grew up during the "Catalog Years" of the fifties, many fond memories are brought back as Lionel Trains were such a major part of most boys' life then, especially around Christmas. Hollander's writing is excellent, lively and clear. Its a good story complimented with a description of the social climate in the USA at the time. Anyone who had a Lionel (or American Flyer) as a kid should read this book.
