I bought this to learn more about vocal techniques for singing rock. I've been taking singing lessons for over 2 years, both classical and CVI. The techniques covered in this DVD with the attached audio cd are not the problem. I think they are as good as any. The problem is the "layout" of the dvd, which is more like a long documentary and bands talking highly about Melissa Cross. You have to know your pitch before using the audio cd, which is fine. But a lot of the techniques covered on the dvd are NOT on the audio cd. Which make them impractical to practice, because you have to memorise them yourself or write them down or somehow otherwise make your own system for practicing them. You can't just copy the cd to your iPod and go. The CD has about 30 lessons, but each one is repeated about 5-6 times, one for each pitch! In stead of using up all this space on repeating an exercise I'd rather have a cd with ALL the lessons including breathing exercises. In my case it's caused the DVD to become a dust collector. Instead I've gone back to doing my old daily practices, plus some of Seth Riggs' lessons. Other lessons include the teacher going through each lesson with a singer BEFORE you get your turn. This way you know how it's supposed to sound, and when to correct yourself. The Zen of Screaming audio cd does not, which can do more harm than good if you're practicing wrong. I've also gotten a new vocal coach, and it turns out all the lessons I've taken that I thought didn't have effect actually have - I just needed the right teacher and chemistry to get it out. So for me this DVD wasn't a holy grail, but it might be great for others!Read full review
Hit the ground running with your singing. You need this DVD. I didn't care about screaming, I just wanted to learn how to sing better. After ten years of singing and not improving my range or vocal abilities, I noticed immeditate positive results with this course. Melissa Cross is a classically trained vocalist, but she "gets" the other styles of singing that ain't opera. Right away you learn breathing exercises that will help you get the lung support for optimal studio and stage performance. That was one of my vocal flaws that I corrected. I wasn't breathing right so I didn't have the air I needed to push a strong voice. You learn to find your vocal range is and have realistic expectations for yourself. I was hoping I was a male tenor but found I was a baratone. But I will sing better when I sing within my range and not try to tackle notes that I don't have the equipment for. Included with the DVD is a bonus CD of singing warmups for each vocal range. I use this warmup CD before every performance because it primes your body for the work out it has to do later. Many other tricks of the trade are taught here along with some techniques to help you : use your stomache to get powerful vocals, understand the difference between singing and shouting and how to utilize both, get some rasp in your voice without hurting it and much more.... I would recommend this DVD for beginner and even seasoned vocalists. I've watched it many times and always pick up something new. This is a must have and a Keeper. (Note for Singers and Screamers:) Master this Volume 1 before moving on to Volume 2. )Read full review
Dvd was pretty informative if youre just starting out singing/screaming. However there is not much structure on screaming in this dvd. I actually bought this dvd because after four years of not doing this type of singing i got back in another band and had trouble losing my voice. After watching this dvd it actually made my situation worse. Im not saying its bad technique, but if youve had succsess in doing this type of vocal style before then this might not be a good tool for you. I found after watching it, it actually created more of a problem because it made me think too much about the technique. Keep in mind, this is just my opinion and im sure alot of people have had succsess with the dvd. The figured out what my problem was the first 2 minutes into the dvd and that was my breathing technique which was very easily corrected myself. I will check out The Zen of Screaming 2. I think that dvd will cover more of what I'm looking for. Good luck everybody!!! I hope this review helpsRead full review
Well, I heard about this awesome 'how-to-sing-scream' dvd, and, being a vocalist with a love for screaming vocals, i decided this would be a great investment for my voice. i wanted to learn to scream-sing without all the damaging effects, and Melissa Cross is practically a genius. Why pay over 200 dollars an hour for her expertise when you can pay about 10 times less for her instruction in your own living room? Even if you're not interested in learning to scream-sing, she gives some easy technique to improve your singing voice. Definately worth-while!
It has a few good suggestions, and some good exercises. However.. Most of these exercises are the same as one would use for normal singing. The DvD has literally nothing helpful to teach the viewer to "scream." In fact, it doesn't even attempt to teach you how to scream. If you CAN ALREADY SCREAM then this DvD would be great, because it has a lot of tips to improve your technique. If you CANNOT ALREADY SCREAM (like me) then this DvD will absolutely useless to you, because you won't be able to use any of the information provided.
