In 1970, Airport was one of the first of the "Disaster Genre" of movies that include "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno". Based on actual facts of the happenings at a large Midwestern airport during a winter snow storm, a packed Boeing 707 jetliner takes off for a nonstop flight to Rome. Shortly after departing, a distraught woman tells authorities that her mentally deranged husband is on board the flight, and that he may have a bomb. A further check verifies that the man purchased a very large insurance policy shortly before boarding the airplane. When the man is confronted, he starts to surrender, but a loud-mouthed passenger spooks him, and he detonates the bomb inside the starbord rear restroom causing major structural damage to the airplane. Although still flying, the plane is seriously compromised making its return to safety a major problem. Other back stories include an ongoing affair between the airplane captain (Dean Martin) and the head stewardess, a failing marriage between the airport manager (Burt Lancaster) and his selfish society wife, and local home-owners picketing the airport about jet noises, all while there is a major snow storm wrecking havoc. Further complicating matters, the longest runway is blocked by a stuck airplane making operations even more dangerous. Unless the stuck airplane can be moved, it almost surely means the damaged returning airplane will not be able to safely land without tragic results.Read full review
This "disaster-style" movie was quite good, with wonderful stars Dean Martin, Barbara Hale, Jean Seberg, Barry Nelson, Dana Wynter, Van Heflin, Burt Lancaster,Maureen Stapleton, and of course, that diaster film stalwart, George Kennedy (the audience looked for him in every film of this type). The movie focuses on the individuals, as well as the basic plot (problems in a snowbound airport, and in flight as well). Fast paced, with a clear script, and produced by Ross Hunter in his inimitable style (glossy and with telephone calls "montaged" onto the screen), this film shows how good films can be when done in true "Hollywood Style"...If you haven't seen this movie yet, you're in for a treat.
AIRPORT is a classic film! Everything including the musical score is fantastic! I highly recommend AIRPORT!
