I've been waiting for this title to come out on DVD. The background is full of actual Washington, DC scenery, for example, the apartment building just over the Bison bridge in Georgetown. I've been there myself, delivering documents to DC's workers of the government. The story is probably typical of the the way things work on Capitol Hill, including the observation that "we tolerate just about anything" up here, and the explanation of why. However, one of the most endearing aspects of this Preminger film is that it is a bookend for Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone. The two work together in Advise and Consent towards the end of their careers, just as they did in Mutiny on the Bounty, at the beginning, of at least Franchot Tone's career. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the movie or not...but I have to say that it was fantastic...a classic. The actors did a superb job with their performance. If you buy or purchase this movie, you won't be sorry. As soon as the President (Franchot Tone) selects his nominee, Robert Leffingwell (Henry Fonda) for Secretary of State, the United States Senators begin to wheel and deal behind closed doors, while the Senate committee investigates the candidate's past. What will turn up during the investigation? Could there be possible communist members in the senate or even bi-sexuality ... just to add to the drama on Capitol Hill. Will they let the president get his dying wish or will this just be brushed under the rug like everything else? When viewers think they know how Advise and Consent is going to end...they're wrong! Instead they are going to be surprised by the ending... If you want to buy this movie as well as other classics stop by SpareTime EntertainmentRead full review
Advise and Consent has an excellent cast and storyline. It is very engaging and a realistic vew of how the US Senate operates inside its chamber. Dispite this being a fictional movie, it reflects how our legislative body continues to makes decisions.

A great surprise at the end. A very good look into the workings of Congress. I had to ask a few questions. about what was happening. It is a little bit dated,. I don't know that certain things on this movie would apply to Congress now.

Wonderful cast, the story keeps you spellbound, much better than Mr Smith Goes to Washington. This is truly how DC used to work. Inspiring.
