Kevin Ames is a no-nonsense writter. ALL of his books are a treasure-trove of... being a DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHER, taking cues from his mentor, the late Dean Collins (another incredible author on photography). This book strictly takes on... my favorite subject... WOMEN! lol Not that you cannot apply what you learn to other subjects, just happens to be that you are going to learn on models/ beauty subjects. Kevin is a succesful commercial photographer down in Atlanta and he really does know the in-and-outs of advertising and the catalog/ beauty business. There are some steps/projects that take retouching far-too-far... but it's sort of the point too. You really should learn some tips and tricks that you KNOW you aren't going to like because, you never can tell when you may need that technique in your arsenal. I am ALL FOR NEVER doing Photoshop and I shoot in a way to minimize my time infront of the computer, but it is a necessary evil. I try to keep a very light and even hand in Photoshop work and this book helps me get there. kevin has a very matter of fact and easy way of writting and fully explains everything. This isn't a book that is for RAW beginners, it's going to help if you go through something like Classroom In A Book first, but if you are willing to be patient, you can get it. If you are primarily a PEOPLE shooter, this book, Lee Varis' SKIN and bruce Smith's Digital Fashion Photography will probably be all you need to train yourself to working in digital.Read full review
