I have used the Abravocabra program with different levels of middle school students, and I have had great success with it. I use pretests and a final post test at the end of the year when I'm using this program, and I find that kids really do retain a lot of words over the course of the year because of the strategies presented in the book. The book is made up of vocabulary units, each with ten or twelve words. It gives basic ideas for incorporating vocab lessons in the classroom, and the few I've chosen I use over and over again because they work so well (role play, guess and check, write a story, illustrate words). What I like most about the book is that it includes reproducibles of the words, and the tests require kids to really show that they understand the meanings of words. In other words, they have to complete tests that consist of fill-in-the-blank stories that require them to really know the word. It's a great program that my students also enjoy. I HIGHLY recommend this book.Read full review
