This 1948 feature paired Universal's top comedy team, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello with their all-time classic horror characters; Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Frankenstein Monster. The Monster is played by Glen Strange, who portrayed him in "House of Frankenstein" and "House of Dracula". Lon Chaney, Jr. appears for the fifth time as Lawrence Talbot/ "The Wolf Man" and Bela Lugosi makes a magnificent return to the role that made him a star, Count Dracula. Odd as it may seem, this is only Lugosi's second time as the fiendish bloodsucker. While Abbott and Costello are at the top of their comedy career, watching the monsters played by the original actors is incredibly satisfying as well. Each creature gets screen time and a chance to have fun and the fight/chase scenes at the film's end are better than in some of the straight horror pictures. Dialogue is priceless. When Larry Talbot direly warns Chick and Wilbur (Abbott & Costello) that he turns into a wolf when the full moon rises, all Wilbur can do is quip "Yeah, you and 20 million other guys"! This particular DVD is especially worth having because it includes a 'making of' documentary with a few outtakes, stills and poster art (Dracula's cape lining is gold, not red) and a great commentary track with great Universal monster and comedy anecdotes. I loved this movie 30 years ago as a kid, and it's only gotten better!Read full review

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein marks the final act of the Universal Pictures classic horror movie era. The plot is typical Abbott and Costello fare and the jokes don't hold up well today but there is a clever sexual double entendre delivered within the first ten minutes. Granted, Glenn Strange sleepwalks through his part as Frankenstein's monster but Bela Lugois milks his Dracula character one more time effectively. Lon Chaney Jr. has aged a little bit but he still manages to make the transformation every full moon. This DVD offers a great commentary that is well worth the purchase price. I recommend watching the movie once without the commentary then a couple of times with the commentary on.
The last great effort of bringing the universal monsters out to scare. What it lacks in depth of plot it more then makes up with nostalgic moments of horror in black and white. With a commentary by Gregory Mank, bonus materials, one can get the back story of why and how this film came to fruition way back in 1948. Highly recommended to those that can't get those classic universal monsters out of their craw. By the way, Lugosi is awesome.

This classic is the perfect combination of iconic Universal monsters and the greatest comedy duo of the 1940's. I like how one reviewer put it: "The movie is funny when it needs to be funny and scary when it needs to be scary". Abbott and Costello display perfect timing with each other and the monsters and provide plenty of laughs and yet the screenplay allows the Frankenstein Monster, Dracula, the Wolfman and even the Invisible man to enjoy their due respect. I believe only Young Frankenstein did a better job of parodying Universal Studio's classic monsters. This movie wears as well today as it did over 50 years ago. The DVD I purchased came with a nice bonus mini-documentary about the production of the movie. I consider this DVD a "must have" addition to any viewer's library.
