I've had asthma and allergy issues since I was a kid. I went thru two Hunter Air Purifiers, which were fine for a large room, but had to be moved around to be effective in the house. The Austin Air HM400 changed all of that. Within 30 minutes of turning it on, and placing it in the middle of the house, with all doors open inside, the house smelled differently, there was no dust, and my sneezing - even on allergy meds - stopped within three days. Yes, it's not cheap if bought at $538 list price, but the difference in air quality is amazing. It has three speed settings, with the lowest being barely audible, while the medium and high are definitely heard. When I had it on high initially, a phone caller asked if I was driving with the window down, but I was only five feet away from it at the time. At night, after running on medium most of the day, I turn it on high if pollen is up out side, otherwise, it's on medium or low. Across the house, it's just white noise, but the difference in waking up without a stuffed nose is worth it all. Seriously consider this product. With a five year warranty on the filter pack, even though it is $214 to replace, the cost is every five years, not yearly. If the filter is filled up before then, you get a pro-rated replacement. Not much of a change in my electric bill, even running it most of the day, every day. It's worth every penny.Read full review

You can't go wrong with this unit .. though I will say we've only had it for several months, its performance is phenomenal thus far .. I did quiet a bit of research about brands, types, etc for air purifiers, and this brand was the "biggest bang for the buck" ... or so I read. We moved from south Florida to an northern area where smoking outside isnt possible for us during the colder winter months .. some of the inside areas were starting to get an odor from occasionally smoking, so before we were smoking full time indoors we decided to purchase a higher quality unit .. I chose this model and brand, and on eBay purchased a used one. Yes, even used it really does a great job. HEPA filter is expensive ($150) but as I understand it, will only need replacing every 3-5 years, which is fine. Its a larger unit and handles a heavier volume of air, which is what we wanted. When you hav it turned up on "high" this unit can be rather noisy, but we hav it on low if we are present, if at all. Mainly, we turn it on at night, and it clears the whole downstairs (approx 1500 sq ft) easily. I recommend the AUSTIN brand and this model works awesome for our needs.Read full review

Bought product when our old air purifier's motor died. We had a Kenmore model with a washable pre-filter and washable metal plate collection cell. I purchased the Austin Air model after researching product reviews/ratings. It appealed to me because it had a five year warranty and was maintenance free, also it has no lights on it (my other cleaner was so bright I taped a piece of cardboard over the lights). Our home has a great room - combo kitchen, living room & dining room - so we needed something to clean the air from cooking, as well as the cat hair & dander and dirt from living on a rural unpaved road. This air cleaner seems to work well. There was nothing to set up - took it out of the box and plugged it in. The main problem is that it is a little loud even at the lowest setting, has a slight rattle to it, and blows a pretty strong flow of air out one side. We are concerned that there is no pre-filter to clean on a regular basis because our other one was pretty gross after a month with cat fur, and grease etc. I think I may open this thing up after a few months just to see. I cannot imagine it collecting a year of cat fur etc and still be putting out clean air. Time will tell. So far it seems to work well. But if you expect this machine to clean all the dust out of the room, you will be disappointed! It was comparable in price to the one I had before.Read full review
I had been looking for an air purifier that would honestly, no hype, deal with (a)noxious vapors, chemicals, and gases; (b) handle as much area as possible; and (c) not cost a fortune. So far, the Austin Air HealthMate has lived up to my health practitioner's recommendation. We find that when the toxins are coming in fast from our not-so-nice neighbor, we have to turn it on high. It's fairly noisy on high, too much for sleep, but it handles the whole first floor of our house (1100 SF) within about 10-15 minutes. Therefore, once the onslaught is over, we can turn it down again to medium fairly quickly. The low setting doesn't move enough air for our whole first floor, so we keep it mostly on medium. Medium is fairly easy listening for me, and I have extraordinarily good hearing. I really think this purifier has saved our health. We haven't tried changing filters yet, but it should be fairly easy, and from what I can tell, it's not a frequent expense. Overall, it's the best value I found anywhere. It looks nice and has a small footprint, too.Read full review
For years I have been using the best sharp air purifier. It finally got moved to the back porch to protect me from criminals smoking after I got this austin. I put the austin in my bedroom in place of the sharp. There is NO comparison with the sharp. It is phenomenally better than the sharp. I have asthma and this helps me sleep without choking at night. The sharp was hepa + charcoal + ionic. The austin is hepa + charcoal + zeolite. One of the best features of the austin is using more absorbants/adsorbants instead of ionic. The ionic creates ozone which is bad for me. That not only makes the austin about 600% the capacity but even better for lack of ozone. And a BONUS: its much quieter and made in USA. To hell with chinese garbage. If we stop buying chinese garbage, they will stop making chinese garbage. REAL AMERICANS BUY AMERICAN.Read full review
