As many times as I have seen this movie at the theater, I can now watch it at home when I'm feeling like I want to go back in time. I watched the original A Star Is Born with Judy Garland and James Mason as an 8 year old with my Mom, but of course didn't understand all of the nuances of their relationship and what was really happening. This version, with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson is the same story of 2 people trying to live their lives (sometimes in the fast lane) that showed the difference that 22 years later makes in the updated retelling. The music is great (Barbra could really hit the lengthy notes then) and Kristofferson is rough enough around the edges to make you root for the couple to win out over the road blocks in their lives. If you're a Streisand fan, you should watch this at least 5 times, it's that good.Read full review

The video only plays to a certain point and then is blank. I tried to fast forward and to try to get it to work using it with the commentary option and it still stopped in the same place. It isn't my DVD player because other videos work fine on it. There is no visible smudge or scratch marks on the video. It is a defective product. It only plats halfway through each time. About 20 scenes all together.

Generally speaking, remakes suck. This is the 3rd movie titled "A Star Is Born" and the second remake. The original, made in 1937 was a good movie. The first remake, staring Judy Garland, was So-So and really not as good as the first movie wise, but did have some good songs in it. When this remake came out I was not expecting much, but having seen the first 2, felt I had to give it a try. Seldom am I so pleasantly surprised. Kristofferson was excellent in his roll, of a drug using, burned out, drunk rock star. Streisand, who I personally despise, pulled out the performance of her life, and even though I can't stand her personally, no one can take away the power of her beautiful voice. The songs are masterfully composed, with the names of Paul Williams, Kenny Loggins, and Leon Russell contributing to one of the most popular song scores ever. "Evergreen" by Streisand/Williams, won both an academy Award, and a Golden Globe for 1976's best original song. The chemistry between the two stars was unmistakable, bringing a sense of realism to the characters. All this aside though, the screenplay offered a twist from the 2 former versions, in that our pair were musicians, as opposed to actors in the original, and the first remake. This one subtle change seamed to make the movie more contemporary, and more compelling. The full gambit of emotions are achieved, from humor, through anger, from selfless gallantry, through extreme sorrow. You will laugh, you will cry, and most of all, you will enjoy this film, over and over. I own all three versions, and this is not only my favorite version, but one of my favorite films of all time. I highly recommend it to you! The WildmanRead full review
The movie is excellent! I had it in VHS format and when I heard it was out in DVD format, I went to ebay and purchased it! The music is fantastic and especially "Evergreen", most gals usually use this song for their wedding, I did some 30 years ago and I may again in 5 years. It's a pretty song. Most of the VHS formats, I have changed to DVD and this title isn't of any exception! It's just a sad movie, 2 singers, one female and one male down on his luck, figures if they team up they could be great for each other through music and life, except the male singer is a hasbeen and a drunk and the female goes on with her career..where it's sad not only with his career, but he ends his life through alcohol and high speed of a one car accident. The female hears her partner everyplace she turns. Nevertheless, I am glad I got the movie!Read full review
