Having been a Corpsman with the 1st. MarDiv from July '67 thru July '68 and seeing a good friends picture on the cover I was excited to read this book. I was disappointed with my friends real name only being written once, with an odd name many times after. The discription of Marine life in Viet Nam was in my view very accurate and well written. The chapters on Marine Sniper school became very selfcentered, long and boring. The discription of, "rear areas", was untrue and showes the authors love for himself, there were no, "rear areas", in a Marines Viet Nam.
I was there on the sand bar, and it never should have happened!! We could have reduced the VC position before we started the crossing. We were used as a Gambit play to keep the VC there so we could kill more of them than they killed of us. A battle of attrition is for crap!
