Best Motion Picture of the Year Joel Coen Ethan Coen Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen Joel Coen Ethan Coen Synopsis: Imaginatively exploring questions of faith, familial responsibility, delinquent behavior, dental phenomena, academia, mortality, and Judaism - and intersections thereof - A Serious Man is the new... A Serious Man is the story of an ordinary man's search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and F-Troop is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik (Tony Award nominee Michael Stuhlbarg), a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous acquaintances, Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed), who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. Larry's unemployable brother Arthur (Richard Kind) is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny (Aaron Wolff) is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter Sarah (Jessica McManus) is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. "A darkly funny, affectionate homage to their Jewish roots, A SERIOUS MAN feels like the Coens' most disarmingly personal film..." Washington Post (10/09/2009) Included in Entertainment Weekly's "The Best Films Of The Year" -- "Funny and savage in equal measure..." Entertainment Weekly - Lisa Schwarzbaum (12/25/2009) Ranked #7 in Rolling Stone's "The 10 Best Movies Of 2009" -- "[D]eliciously tongue-in-cheek, and dead-on serious." USA Today - USA Today Critic (12/31/2009) 5 stars out of 5 -- "Stuhlbarg, an American stage actor with only a few films on his CV, is brilliant as the anxious, bespectacled Larry..." Excellent direction/production, as with all Coen brothers efforts. Regular people in extraordinary (often weird) situations.

I have just been watching SERIOUS MAN and was most disappointed with it. Don't get me wrong, I am a Coen Brothers fan. But this, in the tradition of the Coens, is an observation on people, more specifically, the Jewish community. Only problem, it is all that. Only that. Does not seem to be a point or a moral if only to accept with simplicity anything that happens in your life. Seems a little thin for my taste to make a full length movie. And the end is just totally awful and empty. Seems like an unfinished movie. Like it is said in the EXTRAS, the Coens wanted to reminisce on their childhood but perhaps they should have included some meat around the bone. Or perhaps, they are losing the touch...!!
If you like the Cohen brother's movies, then check this out. I think it's underrated and one of their best.

Another classic tale by the Cohen Brothers ! The movie opens with a very powerful fable, which my guess would be going back many generations in this Jewish family. It's a dark comedy and well worth seeing. The Cohen Brothers are brilliant - the cinematography is nothing short of amazing - every detail brings you back to the 60's time period. The characters are rich and it's the kind of movie that you would want to see over and over again, and would probably get more out of it each time. I highly recommend this movie.--It's a fine example of the genius of the Joel and Ethan Cohen.
