I got this based on the many rave reviews on CNet. I had a Motorola Barrage (V860) and wish I would have kept it for one reason: reception ability. The V860 did a much better job of pulling in a signal. In places where the V860 would get 1 bar and be usable (could hold a call ok), the Convoy drops completely and says "searching for service". Otherwise it's an okay phone. I don't think it is nearly as rugged as the V860, it lacks immersion rating, and the battery cover is flimsy and lacks an O-ring. The latch also is easy to rotate. I could see it coming loose carried on a duty belt. Rugged? Don't think so. Other than the construction and reception issues, the phone has excellent battery life, much better than the V860. It also has a much better speakerphone and earpiece sound quality is excellent. The menus are much quicker and don't lag, the camera is pretty good. The music player, however, sucks. No tone controls or equalizer, and it's pretty clumsy. It also doesn't get loud when using a stereo headset. The screens also have very high resolution and are easy to see. The keypad is probably the best I've ever used on a standard (non-keyboard) phone. Tactile feel and easy to operate, even with gloved hands. The PTT button, however, is oddly placed at the top left corner. It's red, and I first mistook it as a power switch. It's a small square size and in a strange place for a PTT switch. It is also easily actuated if the phone is carried in a pouch as you have a tendency to grip the top sides when pulling it out. Overall, it's an okay phone but the mediocre reception and build quality make me wish I would have kept the V860. I hope the new owner is happy with it. I will be scouting for another one.Read full review
This is the 3rd such model of the same phone I am familiar with its functions and enjoy what it has to offer.... MP3, Voice dial plus touch play screen.... Simple although loaded the all options I want in a mobile device... I work consruction, so a big bulky phone such as the black berry I-phone etc... just wont work.. With my device I have a clip so it is mounted inside my hard hat. This protects the phone, it wont take a picture of my pocket, or try to place a voice dial call.... The small but clear sounding speaker allows me to enjoy my pre loaded music on its 8 gig micro sd card with out having to use head phones, "which are not allowed" this function is very important it make the day go by much better... Most work sites radios are not allowed this is load enough for me to hear and quiet enough not bother other workers. Plus if I get a incoming call I can easily remove my hard hat and push the speaker phone button to converse, then return to my music. Plus it takes decent pics and video's...Read full review
The Samsung SCH U550 is a nice, slim phone without the flimsy feel of the Razr models. It has a typical keypad and interface; nothing fancy. It it Blue Tooth enabled. One really cute gimmick is that you can refine the text of your numbers including style and colors. One obvious drawback is that the mirror-like face is subject to scratching and fingerprints. The phone comes with music and video capabilities. Since the controls for these, e.g., play, pause and fast forward, are all on the outside face of the phone, you have to "lock" them or else you will here the constant beeping when these buttons are pressed accidentally. The lock has a tendency of unlocking intermittently for no apparent reason. The phone generally gets good reception on the Verizon network. There are occasional dropped calls, both outgoing and incoming, but probably less than on my last LG cellphone. All in all a good phone for the money (no additional cost when renewing your Verizon contract).Read full review
I got this phone for my dad and we have been very impressed so far with this phone (1 month). The voice quality is very very good and it is really easy to understand people on it. The camera takes very nice pictures and the overall phone is pretty fast with very little lag. The speakers are very loud and work very well. Battery life is extremely good lasting 4 days with no problem depending on use. The buttons are very big and easy to press which make them good for an older person. There is an option to make all fonts large which really help older people to see without their reading glasses. Overall you cant really go wrong with this phone if you are looking for a solid flip phone without too many bells and whistles. Everything just works which is awesome.
Now, your wondering why I posted a review for the u340 under the 550 but thats only because i posted a review on it. I got the u340 again and it is awesomee. I like the numeric keypad more then the Intensity's keyboard. The u450 intensity was also a good phone but I find myself typing faster on this type of a keypad so I decided to go for it again and got one. So I wanted to make a review. The size is excellent. I noticed if I had a smaller pocket, I found my intensity, easily popping out of the top of it (pocket) with this one it goes in VERY well into the pocket. The camera is only a vga camera, but isn't half bad. I consider it something you should look for if you want a basic phone. ********************* I no longer have this device*************************
