Professor Crossan has all the background and scholastic development that I can relate to with warmth and happiness. I am speaking about his education in the home and school of the Catholic scene during the years of his youth and young adulthood. For this reason, I looked forward with great anticipation to reading his memoir which has been my only contact with him. However, I was shocked by his taking a critical turn from all the Faith that I love. Crossan not only left the Church that had given him the years of superior education thereby providing him with the means to become famous and wealthy but he has the nerve to deny the Church's magnificent liturgy in all its beauty and deep truths. How is he different from any other fallen away Catholic who has nothing but scorn to heap on the Monther who nourished and guided him? Were we expected to gather in one of his "groups" to listen to his teaching about Jesus in history or some other place? Evidently he thinks this is superior to the Mass and its ruberics. I fear Mr. Crossan has followed the wrong path of self glorification rather than being obedient to Jesus when He asked the mature John to follow Him. May we all pray that the grace of God enables him to find his way home before he leaves this world.Read full review
While having read only a few of his scholarly books on the life of Jesus, I am familiar with Mr. Crossan from his appearances on TV. His engaging personality and clear communications style come out wonderfully in this book on the life of John Dominic. As in his other books, he states his purpose up front and leads us in a logical set of steps through the major phases of his life, and how they affected his career choices and the opinions he takes in his scholarship. I knew I liked the guy before I read a single word he had written, and frankly his professional books have sometimes been way over my paygrade in understanding, but like Scientific American, worth wading through to the end. This autobiography is a lot more fun to read, because he knows we are not fellow experts on him, the way his other books appeal to fellow biblical historians. It's great to read an autobiography written by someone with the skills of a biographer. And a life worth knowing about!Read full review
