What's not to love about a hilarious whodunit whose high-end heroine says of the murder victim's 20-carat yellow diamond, which has mysteriously shown up in a Christie's auction-house catalog, "…you don't sell something like that on eBay." This is the second Lacy Fields Mystery, and author Janice Kaplan has definitely transcended the dreaded sophomore slump. Once again, upper-crust interior designer Lacy Fields' life just happens to involve murder. This time around, the victim is her latest client, beautiful young Cassie Crawford, who drops dead in front of Lacy during a tour of Cassie's drop-dead gorgeous newly decorated penthouse. Then number one on the suspect list turns out to be Lacy's best friend, Hollywood casting agent Molly Archer, who's suspiciously "close" to the victim's billionaire husband. Shopping meets suspense when Lacy once again takes it upon herself to track down a killer. "A Job to Kill For" is just as witty and satirical of Los Angeles' status-obsessed culture as its predecessor, "Looks to Die For" (for which you can also read my eBay reviews, one of which can be found @ http://catalog.ebay.com/Looks-Die-Janice-Kaplan-2008-Paperback-Reprint-/59635979/r.html?_fcls=1; it contained TWO eBay references!). Lacy somehow manages to juggle her responsibilities as a wife and mother with her job as designer to the city's somebodies AND her avocation as part-time sleuth, and she does so with considerable wit and style, all while wearing fabulous designer outfits and glamorous accessories that sometimes even prove integral to the plot. This is an author worth buying in hardcover. Kaplan has constructed a thoroughly satisfying storyline peopled with characters who jump off the page and including enough menace to be engrossing. For all of its fluffy premise and skewering of shallow values, "A Job to Kill For" has more substance than your average cozy, putting it a notch above the the genre's standard themed series. If you like your mysteries light on gore and heavy on humor, you'll definitely enjoy this lighthearted whodunit. As a bonus, it comes with a reading-group guide. Thank you for reading my review.
