  • A History of Violence (2006, DVD)

I expected bloody senselessness and instead saw a film laden with the deepest human emotions. It was real. From youthful loving to hard violence, from simple innocent joys to the full depth of adult violence and sex, and ultimate redemption, this film has it all. Every piece of clothing and set, every camera angle and lighting propelled the story relentlessly. I was never bored, and never overwhelmed with overdone violence. Nothing was gratuitous. Viggo Mortensen proved he's one of the finest actors to come along in a long while. Maria Bello carries so much on her talented shoulders. With Mortensen she shines with alternately warming and heartbreaking truthfulness. Ed Harris was delightfully menacing, and William Hurt gave the liveliest and best performance I've seen from him. This movie ...

  • Great for Viggo fans

I want to state right off that this is NOT a kid movie or a family movie. Watch is before allowing your preteens-teens watch it as it does have violence and 2 sex scenes. I personally thought the sex scenes were tame compared to what can be found on TV, but the implication that the hero was doing ....to the female and vice versa in the first sex scene seemed offensive to one freind of the family even though they didn't SHOW it in detail. The violence is a tad gory and more realistic than most movies of the this type, but it doesn't dominate the movie storyline so fans of Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill will be disappointed or feel mislead by the title. You have a man who has been married long enough to have a teenage son and a young daughter. He runs a diner and all seems quite in this small ...

  • A history of violence

David Cronenberg in his most mainstream film gives us the adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name. This film questions on the how far you will go to use violence to protect your family and how deep its connection with all of us.As we all know its human nature. The film is fairly close to the graphic novel with minor little differences like for example names have been changed, also the town's name plus there are a couple of sex scenes that are not in the book.As the film starts we meet two bad guys in the middle of nowhere that cause the whole plot to unravel for Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) and his lawyer wife (Maria Bello) and his two kids Jack (Ashton Holmes) and Sarah (Heidi Hayes). While the two men are on the way to the small Indiana town that Tom lives. We see how life is in a ...

  • Your past can have a way of haunting your present.

This is an extremely well crafted motion picture. It takes a fairly trite concept and produces a gripping story. When a mid-western restaurant owner takes out two psychopathic killers in his restaurant, the media coverage grabs the attention of east coast mobsters with a bone to pick. How this affects him and his family, and what it reveals about their love and courage, provides an intriguing tale. This is a rather edgy film, with extraordinary scenes of lovemaking and killing, and not suitable for the innocent or faint of heart. Rather than use top rank leading actors, the movie goes with an excellent but rather lesser known primary cast, with profound results. The way this movie was produced and directed adds many dimensions to the story, and makes for a movie very much worth ...

  • Words almost fail me that was how awesome the movie was

om Stall is living a happy and quiet life with his lawyer wife and their two children in the small town of Millbrook, Indiana, but one night their idyllic existence is shattered when Tom foils a vicious attempted robbery in his diner. Sensing danger, he takes action and saves his customers and friends in the self-defense killings of two-sought-after criminals. Heralded as a hero, Tom's life is changed overnight, attracting a national media circus, which forces him into the spotlight. Uncomfortable with his newfound celebrity, Tom tries to return to the normalcy of his ordinary life only to be confronted by a mysterious and threatening man who arrives in town believing Tom is the man who's wronged him in the past. As Tom and his family fight back against this case of mistaken identity and ...
