A great patriotic movie of our air force during the "cold war"!
The aircraft scenes of the B-52 are impressive as Rock Hudson takes over a S.A.C. wing to get them in shape for the unscheduled ORI inspection. At first he is disliked for pointing out the weaknesses of the command, but in the end the men are rooting for him to succeed. This is a more serious role for Hudson than his romantic comedies, but it fits him like a glove and is one of his best movies! Look for Robert Lansing as an aircraft maintenance person who will soon star in his own series -12 O Clock High. It's a great movie for it's time. Story is sappy, but watching the actors, in light of their other work, is interesting. It's the Airplanes and the flying sequences that MAKE this film. Sure, there are training films, and DOD films, and news reels, but Hollywood knows the best way to document these machines, elevating them to works of Art. This is the best way to preserve history for those who cannot get the chance to see the few remaining aircraft still flying or those in a museum.It's a great movie for it's time. A Gathering Of Eagles.
Waited a long time for this one. Hard to get. Movie depicts a time during the Cold War when the US AIR FORCE STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND had to get airborne in 15 minutes or less. Reveals in a mild manner the stress the Wing Commander was under and its effects on family and personnel. Rock Hudson comes through in this film and supporting cast.
