This series a nice one for those who might be interested in an Alaskan outdoor adventure mystery theme. Kept me interested and looking forward to the next book by the author.

I had read other Stabenow books. I am fascinated with her depiction of a lifestyle that is so different from my own. Her descriptions of Alaska, her insights into the Native American culture, her picture of the resilience of people who live much of the year in snow is eye-opening. I bought this particular one, because it was the first in the Kate Shugak series. I wanted to know how she came to be who she is. There is quite a rawness to this series. You can see and feel BEING there. Stabenow does a super job of portrayal. Her characters are real and flawed. All know the flaws in each other, but still continue to live in a community. There is an acceptance of reality. It's rather refreshing. The saying IT IS WHAT IT IS fits this scenario perfectly.
Hard to find the beginning of the Kate Shugak series. So I was delighted to get this one
