I really enjoyed this book up until the last few chapters. I love the way Janette Oke helps you to really take a look at how life was for the people that lived in the era she writes about. This story about a mail order bride takes a look at what made these woman choose to become mail order brides and also looks at some of the reasons why the men chose to "order" a bride. The last couple chapters seemed thrown together and rushed and their only purpose seemed to be to get the salvation message in. I think this could have been done better and the ending seems abrupt. You don't really know what happened to the other characters in the story, they kind of just get dumped. I still really enjoyed reading the book and would still recommend it for reading.
a bride for Donnigan is a clasic Cinderella story set in wild west Kathleen's step mother decided to remarry and she is nothing more then income as a pastry peddler on the streets of London, with a beautiful face and a limp shorter leg kathleen is told over and over no man will want her, Donnigan is a young rancher who has a crusty sidekick as a neighbor and a empty heart, What pulls this story togeather is Kathleen has been told by nasty stepmother no husband wants a wife who chatters so she keeps her thoughts to herself, Donnigan is so in need of a wife who will talk to him, dream with him, the reader is drawn in while these two young newly weds struggle to connect the years of challanges ahead of them and the other mail order brides fates who came with Kathleen..its all a wonderful readRead full review
A Bride for Donnigan explains the concept of the "mail order bride". Kathleen, a very young woman, decides set sail for America, as she feels that she does not "belong" anymore in her own land. And Donnigan, feels that he can not handle his own loneliness any longer. The story does a wonderful job, setting the mood for how it must feel to marry a complete stranger, in the midst of the already hard life of the early western frontier.
