Here's my take on this album: I was expecting more from these guys. I thought the song "From Yesterday" was pretty cool when I first heard it on the radio so I went out and bought the album. But, after hearing the entire album, I believe that the formerly mentioned single is the only song really worth listening to (and even that song needs more of an edge to compete with other bands out there). Additionally, the video for that song is pretty lame. Furthermore, what do kids do with this kind of music nowadays? I guess this would be classified as "Emo?" I don't know, but personally, I really hate whiney bands, they're boring and annoying, and most of this goes from whiney singing to whiney shouting. Also, the lyrics that Jared Leto(?) has written seem so depressing. In fact, the entire album seems to emit an "I'm sad, apathetic, and hate life" kind of vibe. It seems that in their eyes, life is a "Beautiful Lie" which to me is just kind of sad and pathetic. And, after hearing all the whiney bulls--t, the song "Attack" seems to be contrived. Come on, either your a whimp or a warrior, but you can't be both. But let's get real, I presume that these guys have nothing to be sad about. I expect that the lead singer, an actor and now rock star, is set for life. So what's he whining about? And, for the record, 30 year old guys with retro-emo style haircuts look like geeks. If you ask me, go spend your money on a Bush album, at least they had some cool videos. Nuff Said MCLRead full review
I absolutely love this CD. I bought it on a whim after receiving a free download of 30 Seconds to Mars' (30STM) song "The Kill" and falling in love with it. To anyone who has not heard 30STM before, I suggest going to YouTube.com and searching "The Kill 30 Seconds To Mars" and listening to the video. That's right, listen to the video. Unless you are a fan of "The Shining," the music video is extremely weird and may steer you away from buying a great CD. On to the music. The CD opens with the song "Attack". This song is really just a cool song. The lyrics are catchy, and the song will stay in your head for quite some time...that is, until you move on in the CD. The second track, "A Beautiful Lie", shares its name with the name of the CD itself. This song is slower than "Attack", but equally as catchy. The third song, up and away my favorite, "The Kill", is one of the best songs I've heard in quite some time. It starts out slow, and busts out into a loud chorus that you will be singing over and over again. The music video is awesome if you like "The Shining" but otherwise I reccommend staying away from it other than to listen to it. The fourth song, "Was it a Dream?", is a slower song that I enjoy, but has a 50+ second introduction that I haven't listened to since the first time I heard the song. The fifth song, "The Fantasy", is a song with simple background music for the verses with almost whispered lyrics, and a chorus that is quite good. The sixth song, "Savior", is probably my least favorite song on the CD. The song is introduced with a conversation of some sort, which I always skip over, and the lyrics repeat over and over "until you" get fed up with it and "until you" change the song. The chorus, however, I do happen to enjoy, but not enough to propel the song above any of the other songs on the disk. If you don't mind repetative lyrics ("until you..." leads off most lines of the verses), then this song is actually pretty good. The seventh song, "From Yesterday", is a beautiful song. If you are familiar with Richard Marx, not necessarily lyrics-wise, but definately the way the first verse is sung reminds me a bit of his voice (which is a great thing, by the way). The chorus sounds nothing like that, however it is amazing; it's another amazing song. The eigth song, "The Story", is another beautiful song, similar to "From Yesterday". The chorus, which goes "This is the story of my life/These are the lies I have created" and repeats itself once, is performed particularly impressive. The song is great to listen to and is powerful enough to nearly give you goosebumps. The ninth song, called "R-Evolve", is a good song with nothing special to mention about it, but still a good listen. The tenth song, and the last one listed, "A Modern Myth", again has lyrics sung as if Richard Marx was a guest vocalist. It is a powerful song, written and performed beautifully. On to the extra 2 "Hidden Tracks". Untitled, but "Track 11" is a great song to rock out to. I'll be honest, I don't know the lyrics, but I don't care. It's fast and exciting song. "Track 12" I am not too fond of. The only real downsides to this CD are: 1) Many of the songs have extended introductions that can get quite old quite fast 2) The CD is write protected, so you cannot import directly into iTunes and also have a limited amount of copies that you can make. You can import into iTunes by burning yourself a copy of the CD and then importing THAT CD into itRead full review
There are not very many CD's out there that you can listen to all the way thru and like every song, but this is ONE OF THEM!!! I LOVE IT! "The Kill" is my absolute favorite. "Attack" and "Was it a Dream?" are great too! I have to say I have loved this band way before I figured out that Jared Leto was the lead singer...now it makes it all the sweeter! :) (The whole band is attractive!) The lyrics are amazing and just makes you wonder what they were going thru when the songs were written. I love songs that have totally different meanings and interpretations for everyone. I can't wait to see them in concert in March! Check out their videos too! "Bartholomew Cubbins" is an excellent director as well! ;) "From Yesterday" draws you into a fantasy world so amazing. Keep up the EXCELLENT work guys!! Looking forward to the next album!!!!Read full review
Let's be honest, this award winning cd is the one that launched the group to the level of success they've had. The cd has the obvious screamo factors we expect from Leto, especially in "The Kill (Bury Me)" and "Attack", but it isn't annoying or enough to make your cringe. I personally love this cd and use it for gaming, as it has a lot of the upbeat and loud rock elements that keep with the pulse of a variety of gaming experiences. Some try to compare it to "This is War" cd, but it tells a different story and has a different feel, both are great cds for the band, period.
I gave the 30 Seconds to mars album, A Beautiful Lie, a good rating. The music on the album is excellent and very up beat. The cd cover is very colorful and unique, not to mention the cd design is excellent. One thing I dislike about the album is two songs are not listed on the cover and number ten, a modern myth, is over thirteen minutes long and seems to mess up my cd player when i play that track. Besides a few minor things, this cd is wonderful and i'll expect their next album to be even better!
