This collection contains five of the critically acclaimed Ranown Cycle of westerns starring Randolph Scott and directed by Budd Boetticher. These movies are lean, spare, and efficient; all clocking in under 80 minutes. Three (generally considered the better ones) were written by Burt Kennedy and share a similar structure and theme. The other two were written by Charles Lang, and while similar in many ways to the Kennedy scripts, are significantly different in tone: Decision at Sundown is by far the most bleak, and Buchanan Rides Alone is much lighter. Scott was near the end of his career while making these, and in fact retired after Comanche Station (1960) - although he did return for one more movie, Ride the High Country (1962), before retiring for good. That one is also worth finding. The movies make good use of Scott's abilities, age, and personality. Also excellent are the many co-stars; a number of whom were not quite well-known but who went on to bigger things. This list includes Pernell Roberts, Richard Boone, Claude Akins, and James Coburn. Favorites vary person to person, but I'm partial to Ride Lonesome first, and probably Comanche Station next. All five are excellent. The history of the Ranown Cycle is interesting on its own, and well worth looking into. Finally, sharp-eyed shoppers will notice that there is a sixth movie in the collection: A Lawless Street. It is not a "Cycle" film. It does star Randolph Scott, and he is good in it; but it is not the quality of the other five. It is a decent, acceptable western - nothing special, and very similar to a hundred others you've seen (if you like westerns). The other five, however, are essential! This "Round-up" is well worth it.Read full review

WHEN SPEAKING THE NAME RANDOPLH SCOTT, WHAT COMES TO MIND? CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD ACTOR, EXCELLENT AT WHAT HE WAS PAID TO DO, ( ACT) AND THAT HE DID, NO MATTER WHAT ROLE HE PLAYED HE DID IT WELL. BUT MANY OF US THAT GREW UP IN THE DAYS OF WATCHING TV WESTERNS MAY HAVE TAKEN HIM FOR GRANTED, BUT HE STOOD OUT ALONG WITH JOHN WAYNE, GUY MADISON, JOEL MCREA, ALAN LADD, GARY COOPER, CLINT WALKER, HE WAS JUST SO NATURAL AND A FRIENDLY BECOMING FACE THAT MOST PEOPLE LOVED, A WELCOMING PERSONALITY WITH THE ABILITY TO FIT ANY ROLE. IT TRUE THEY DONT MAKE WESTERNS LIKE THEY DID IN YEARS PAST, BUT ONE OTHER THING STANDS OUT, THEY DONT MAKE ACTORS LIKE RANDOLPH SCOTT ANYMORE. AND THIS DVD SET IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF HIS WORKS ALL IN ONE SET AT A BARGAIN PRICE THAT CANT BE BEAT, GREAT VALUE FOR THE MONEY, IM NOT DISAPPOINTED AND I DONT THINK YOU WILL BE EITHER. RANDOLPH SCOTT MAY BE GONE , BUT ISNT FORGOTTEN. Read full review

Are you a fan of the classic westerns? Then by all means this is a must have cd. Randolph and John are the ultimate of the genre. The "man gotta do what a man's gotta do" no nonsense western. Eastwood is good but no one can beat the American made Scott and Wayne movies. This is six of his best. My opinion...Tall T the winner..Richard Boone doing a great supporting act. Having the best laugh in show business, it was usually written into his scripts. Scott and Boone are great in this film. You can't go wrong.

If you like Westerns this collection is worth having, but, face it, like most of Hollywood B movie quality predominates. There is nothing wrong with that, it's part of the attraction. Bud Boetticher who directed most of these used his resources superlatively, getting the most out of what must have been a lean budget, and most of these are really great! A few films come off badly like offhand prime time TV. On whole that doesn't detract from the overall quality of the collection. "The tall T" must be the crown jewel. based on an Elmore Leonard ("Hombre," "3:10 to Yuma) story, it brings out the best in its cast, Scott, Sullivan, Boone. The rest are solid entertainment, the like of which you will not find in theaters nowadays. Scott was the archetypal Western hero, taciturn, stoical, inflexibly honorable. It's a shame the lead part he portrayed is old hat. Read full review

The older movies like these are easy to watch and understand. They are not filled with facial closeup's and extremely vulgar language. Compared to today's movies they may be considered naive but they avoid the awful cursing and self-aggrandizing films called entertainment currently.
