Great book from Krakauer 's point of view. I've been obsessed with the idea of attempting everest or even just visiting the area for the past 6 mo. I can understand their obsession with reaching the top of the world. Even with no mountaineering experience at all myself, I would love to attempt it even knowing it could be deadly and after finishing this book it really hits hard that anything can happen up there, even the strongest climbers can become part of the mountain forever. My thoughts go out to Rob hall and Scott fisher's family and everyone who have lost their lives up there. It's part of them now and they are part of the the mighty Everest forever. Awesome book! ! My next read will be from Anatoli Boukreev's point of view next from the 1996 expedition that went wrong, it's called The Climb. -sherieRead full review

I honestly did not know what to expect when I bought this book other than I saw some good reviews and I was looking for something "non-fiction". I found it difficult to put down and learned a lot about an activity that I would consider totally insane. It was interesting and educational so it achiever my goals. Somewhat similar to "Into the Wild" which is also by the same author.

This book reads very well, it doesn't leave the reader bored, and it really gives you the feeling that you're somehow there watching the whole story unfold. Jon Krakauer does a great job introducing the characters to you, and making you feel as though you know them. It's just a great story from beginning to end, very emotional. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a great drama - whether you're a Mount Everest kinda person or not!
I bought this book because I had already read it and wanted to have a soft cover copy for my parents to read on the plane on their way to Europe. It was such an amazing story that for two days I could not put the book down. I told them that they must read this book. The detail and descriptions that Jon Krakauer uses really lets you in and feel the pain and emotions they went through. I will read this book over and over again. I have read many of Jon Krakauer's books and I love them all. He is an excellent non-fiction writer.
My husband and I had began watching the Discovery Channels "Everest: Beyond the Limit". We had become fascinated with Mt. Everest. I began to search for books to read, and this one came up every time. Not only does it help you understand what it takes to climb such a mountain but it is a tragic story. I have read the book twice now. Kraukauer's writing is so descriptive and clear. I highly recommend this book to everyone!
