Final Fantasy Tactics was a great classic for the PSone that would later be one the games to start making tactical RPGs a normal genre within the world of gaming. (Oh, Squaresoft you guys done it again.) Anyway, as a way of respecting the classic that help kickstart the genre, they decided to make a really good remake of the original for the PSP system. While it is a good remake, the game does have some issues. The difficultly of the game is still up there like the original game and the fact that the story can be extremely confusing or not make any sense at times doesn't help, but with all that aside, War of the Lions is still a nice game to add to your PSP collection.

I'm a big fan of the PS1 version of this game. The story is really good, although maybe a little hard to grasp because of all the conspiracies involved. The music is excellent! One of those kind of games where a song gets tied to your memory of a great scene in the game. The job system is satisfying and there are many ways to customize your characters in ways you like. This game is one of those classic strategy RPGs that is a must play for any fan of the genre. I still have my PS1 version, but thought I'd finally give the PSP one a shot and make note of the differences. I have some issues with this port, the main one being the intentional slow down of battle animations. Actions seem to take much longer to complete and are down right painful to sit through when you're targeting more than one unit on the battle map. Also, to make the game widescreen all they did was stretch it. I installed custom firmware and a patch on my PSP to override both of these "issues" in War of the Lions. It was easy to do but I'm still irritated about it. The game has a new translation of the dialogue that's very Lord of the Rings. It was hard for me to get used to, but I've decided I like it, for the most part. There are a couple of scenes that I felt were more powerful in the original translation, and other scenes improved, especially because the few crappy translation issues from the first game are gone. They changed the names of many abilities, which is unfortunate. I think a lot of time they made more sense in the original translation. I like the new cut scenes because they make good use of the artistry and character design but, in my opinion, the voice acting for the two main characters stink. There are a couple of poignant scenes that are ruined for me because of the emotionless, unrelatable voice acting. There's some new content in the game but I don't think it adds much. They've added another playable character, but he's pretty much like Ramza... At least one of the new job classes looks absolutely useless. There are a couple of new battle scenes that I don't think add anything to the story, and are boring because your playable character is so OP. I feel lukewarm about this version because of the port issues, but I am enjoying this excuse to play Tactics again.Read full review

Final Fantasy Tactics, originally released on the PS1, is an instant classic. Featuring a very in-depth and highly customizable battle system with features like the job system, it is among the best combat systems or maps to be featured in any SRPG (among the likes of Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, and others), and a must-have for fans of the genre, Final Fantasy, or RPGs in general. The story, however, is what really makes this game such a cult classic, being darker and more intricate and emotional that what would be expected. War of the Lions adds on several improvements to all of this, featuring a significantly revamped translation, CG cutscenes, new classes, and multiplayer. However, there are a couple of tech issues, the most noticeable being a large frame slowdown during special moves like Magicks, and the screen is stretched slightly to fit the new aspect ratio. For newcomers, though, both of these issues should go along fine. Overall, a must have for any PSP owner.Read full review
