works great in very cold conditions. The calves pulled it out once (I am using it as a floater), but laying on the ground on top of sand bags it was unharmed and did not melt the bag material. I filled up the tank and threw it back in, worked fine. They have not bothered it since. The horses pulled another one out once, but haven't again. It also continues to work just fine. It is cool to the touch and doesn't seem to just keep heating if the tank is dry or pulled out. If the animals pull either one out again, I will screw a board over one edge to keep them from pulling it out. If pulled out or the tank runs dry, the tank doesn't melt and the animals cannot be burned. Best tank heater I have had yet!

Since it is the middle of summer, I tried it out by putting it in the freezer for 15 min to close the thermostat switch. I then put it in a 5 gallon bucket of water and plugged it into a watt meter. The unit drew 14,550 watts at 120 volts. When the water warmed up and opened the thermostat switch, it stopped drawing current. It is just slightly warm to the touch when operating. It appears to be well constructed.

The livestock trough de-icer will be regularly used and greatly appreciated during the cold winter months.
