The MaXLine series is part of a dinosaur herd of PATA IDE drives that just won't die. I have old PATA Seagates ranging from 5GB all the way up to 320GB collecting in an anti-stat drawer in my spare room. Whenever someone I know runs into trouble and they need a replacement drive NOW, these things always fit the bill. They just work. That said, I'm afraid their time really has passed. The more storage these drives offer, the harder the guts have to work to seek and write data. The result is a LOT of noise. It's not bad if your PC is on the floor a few feet away, but my Dad has his PC right next to him on the desktop (as the name implies!). The result is, during boot up or any heavy activity, I actually get a headache sitting next to the drive because it's SO NOISY! Sounds like marbles in a blender. But hey, if you have a paper due or critical business emails and you need a replacement drive for your PC NOW, go with old and dependable! I only use these for interim drives now, and they go back in the drawer once a proper SATA drive arrives...but they are a true work horse. Too bad Seagate isn't making their SATA drives as dependably as their old PATA drives!!Read full review
My experience with this drive illustrates the risk of using a low-cost hard drive, The drive was D.O.A. and could not be recognized by my computer. The seller issued a refund without question, so I lost nothing but some time and frustration. Slipping an HD into an existing external enclosure is easy. The experience illustrates my cautionary tale about used hard drives: Don’t trust them with critical data. I had planned to use this one only as a system boot backup in a recycled Firewire enclosure. I purchased another used HD on Ebay which works well. However, if I need to store a lot of valuable data, I will go with a new drive every time, at least 3TB and BACK THAT UP!!!
I am very pleased with this hard drive. It is easy to install and runs very quietly. I had a need for a hard drive and when I saw a chance to get this drive, I read the specs. for it and decided to try it. I am glad that I did. As a matter of fact, I am using this hard drive to submit this information. If you're in need of another hard drive and your machine will accept this hard drive, then this is a drive that you should try.
I purchased the hard drive for use as a back system. Upon setting the correct pin setting and assembling in a external hard drive case, the Seagate hard drive formatted perfectly. The access time seem to be fast and efficient. This product will serve its purpose.
I bought this drive used on eBay since cost was a prime factor. It is used as a data only 2nd drive in a Dell PC running Win XP. The drive is used for file storage of video from 12 security cameras. It runs 24/7 and has performed flawlessly. A real workhorse for $24.50!
