Tyrone Power gives one of his very finest performances in this classic noir, a film he very much wanted to make to better display his acting ability. Little wonder that Guillermo del Toro decided to remake the tale. The story is fascinating. Coleen Gray and the other members of the cast effectively support here, and the direction by Edmund Goulding is top-notch. Fans of Power and film noir will not want to miss this one.

A very unusual film noir. Tyrone Power - the matinee idol - in a compelling role of deception and ambition. This has all the best noir qualities. The leading man has a problem, several women vie for his attention, a twist or two, a good story, direction and dark photography. An alternative ending has been added because the studio didn't want their "star" to be a compromised mess. See if you can tell where the film-maker and Power wanted the film to originally end. It is by far better that way.

"Nightmare Alley" is one of the most famous, film noir movies ever made. It's on every film critic's best list. Tyrone Power gives one of his best performances as a carny hustler who reaches a bit to far. It's got a big cast of old-time, Hollywood character actors in supporting roles and the story is very intriguing. The direction is top-notch and the FOX video is like new. This film should be seen by all movie fans.

Not every matinee idol of the past can stand the test of time and changing fashions. But Tyrone Power is a hunk by any decade's standards. In NIGHTMARE ALLEY, his character is not only handsome, but such a smooth-talking charmer that he gets involved with three (count 'em, three)women. But not all three genuinely love him, and not all are duped by his con-man ways. Although NIGHTMARE ALLEY starts and ends in a travelling carnival, you won't see any human oddities or circus acts. Rather, we see the ambitious Power cozying up to Zena, the mind-reader, in order to learn her tricks. Once he knows them, he discards his mentor for a younger woman and takes his fake-psychic act on the road, becoming a nightclub star. But his desire for more fame, more money, and yet another woman --- not to mention his enormous ego --- lead to his downfall. At its core, this is a strangely comforting morality tale in which the bad guy is not only punished, but learns the error of his ways and, after hitting rock bottom, gets a chance to start over with the one woman who truly cares about him.Read full review
I originally bought this dvd to add to my Tyrone Power collection. I had never seen this movie before. It was great. Ty is playing a very dramatic character. He performs as a mind reader with his wife. He gets into a lot of trouble and goes on the run. He sends his wife off on the train sending her to the carnival telling her he will meet her there. But he doesn't show up until later. At the end he became a drunk that gets back with his wife at a carnival at the end. I had never seen him play a role like this before. Anyone that is a Tyrone Power fan will love this picture.
