I saw this film during its first run in the theaters. It was great then and still is today. I enjoyed seeing all the old actors of yesteryear. They were special. Not like the actors today. I worked with Kirk Douglas in Israel in the 80s. I was quite nervous as he had a reputation for being difficult. I want to say he was the kindest most professional actor you could ask for. I enjoyed him from the day he arrived in Israel and that goes for his lovely wife as well. At the end he gave me the nicest compliment I ever got from an actor telling me it was the best production he ever worked on. God bless him as he is 100 years old.

This is an excellent movie! One of the best adventure films! Be sure to watch the director's commentary, it is a fascinating story of how the film was made. The first giant squid came apart & caused them to redo the whole scene which made them go millions over budget and James Mason nearly drown.

For a movie that was made in 1954 by Disney , i thought it had everything in the way of scenery , it kept pretty much to the book as my 8 year old son loved it ,I could see it in his eyes , My wife and myself had bought him a a series of books ( He loves reading ,which is a good thing especially these days with computers and video games )and he had enjoyed them so much that i knew they had made them into movies so i tracked them down for him to get the real feel of how the book portrayed the characters . James Mason as Captain Nemo and of course a very fit Kirk Douglas ,who i thought played the part of Ned very well . This Film is a great all rounder for Kids and grown ups ,it had brought back memories for me when i watched it as a kid myself .Now my boy is on his way with his rare collection of those long ago movies .Next one " Moby Dick " If you are looking for a great movie to watch and bond with your child without the goryness I would recommend this ,but do let him read the book first or read it to him as i did .ENJOY!Read full review
After many years of waiting, Disney finally releases their debut live action 20,000 Leagues on blu-ray. And it looks beautiful. Those that did not grow up wit this wonderful film may expect a musical. For them, sad to say,it is not, though Kirk Douglas spins a pretty decent Whale of a Tale early into the film. It is a decent retelling of the classic novel & holds up (...ok, maybe with the exception of the rather lame "nuclear powered" engine room instead of the book's electrical power). But an amazing cast, a pre-steampunk submarine design, & a bit of B-movie monster put in for fun & excitement. The sets look good & the story never slows down.

20,000 Leagues Under The Sea ~ While they may not compare to today's techno & computerized special effects this movie for it's time had outstanding special effects. They will still hold your attention today! This 1954 Disney rendition of Jules Verne's classic undersea drama won an Academy Award for Best Interior Decoration (color), and Best Special Effects. James Mason stars as Captain Nemo, the builder of the the fantastic submarine, the Nautilus. Nemo rescues survivors from a ship wreck & takes them on an incredible journey in the Nautilus. Captain Nemo's less-than-willing guests include actors Kirk Douglas, Peter Lorre, and Paul Lukas. The movie was directed by Richard Fleicher. This Disney classic continues after all these years to be fun for the entire family. Good movie for an at home "family " movie night. Especially appeals to the boy! Enjoy!Read full review
