The Asus P5A was a great board for it's time, and it did not suffer much from the AGP issues that plagued the VIA chipsets. However, even though ALi had the better overall chipset, they did not sell as well as the VIA products. However this did not stop Asus from shipping out a lot of them. For those of you looking to building a retro gaming system or a DOS Time Machine, then the ASUS P5A or ASUS P5A-B [Baby AT model] will not dissapoint. If you want to install an AMD K6-2+ or AMD K6-3+ make sure you have a 1.04 revision or else it more than likely won't run those CPU's stable, also make sure you update your BIOS to the final one: 1011 Beta 005. I highly recommend this amazing motherboard. It's great for a retro gaming system and it's excellent for overclocking to get a bit more frames out of SVGA VESA mode supported 3D games such as Quake, Tomb Raider, Screamer, Screamer 2, and more! :)Read full review
If you are using a 66MHz FSB K6-2, or an original K6-III that utilizes a higher CPU Voltage, this board is a dream the only motherboard rated better to run an AMD K6-2/III chip is the Gigabyte GA-5AX is considered superior. However, this all is in regards to the revision 1.03, 1.04 motherboards. On the 1.05 and later revisions, a bug was introduced in the Aladdin V chipset that causes issues with the K6+ series of CPUs. These CPUs are the sought after versions as they require a significantly lower CPU Voltage to run, and have a better overclocking functionality. Sadly the ASUS P5A Revision 1.05 does not work with these chips. Even with the last Beta bios released by ASUS. Performance is so degraded that I was getting better frame rates and performance from a Pentium 233 MMX. This is against an AMD K6-III+/450. With the processor being nearly twice the speed and considered more powerful in raw performance terms, this is very off putting. It is a simple chipset issue. So, if you are planning on using a K6-2 or a K6-III normal, non + version, this board will work wonders for you. However, if you are wanting to use a K6-2/III+ model, make certain the revision is 1.04 or earlier. Otherwise the board just won't work for you.Read full review
