I have a 4 mo old son and his first thing to become interested in on tv was Harold and the Purple Crayon. He absolutely loves this show! If he becomes fussy or just irritated I use the show to calm him down. As soon as he hears the theme song he is glued to the tv and will be content until the end, which mostly becomes nap time now. The show is easy to follow, and there is not alot going on in the background so it is easy for newly developing eyes to focus on. There is soft calming music being played and is narrated by the smooth voice of Sheron Stone. I would suggest this as a development tool to all parents because it inspires imagination and Harold has to learn how his emotions affect the world he has drawn.
We started watching this with our grandchildren (who live here) on HBO Kids, and they loved it so much, I have bought two DVD's now. Harold is a 4 year old who has a rich imagination, holding his purple crayon as he drops off to sleep. The bedtime theme encourages children to feel good about going to bed. This is quality learning: peaceful, quiet, happy, entertaining, and educational. This is so beautiful, compared to the sarcastic and violent cartoons on TV nowadays. It is fantasy, but teaches children many things about real life. The music is fun, with lovely tunes that the adults find themselves singing along with. The children are always pleased when we put this DVD on, and never seem to get tired of it. It is made for ages 4-7, but our grandchildren are aged 2-1/2 and 14 mos, and they love it.Read full review
Our toddler grandchildren want to watch it over & over. I think the narrator's voice is soothing to them. She uses "big people" vocabulary, so feel it's helping them with theirs.

I remember reading Harold and the Purple Crayon as child, and started reading the original story to my 4 year old son. I found that the animated series airs on HBO and we had taped an episode to see if it was as captivating for him as the book. He fell in love with Harold and his imagination, so we bought the DVD which has the complete series. The stories are creative and Sharon Stone has a great voice for the narration. Our son loves to take it on the airplane when we travel, and even our 17 month old is starting to enjoy the colorful characters and images.
I love this series. Lots of imagination and different topics for each episode. Highly recommend
