Yes, Marlon had a bad childhood and his parents were drunks who abused him mentally. Yes, he managed to become very successful as an actor and millions of folks could adore him as a result. Yes, he was quite the self-admitted stud and had thousands of sex-partners. At one point he admits that money, sex and booze meant nothing to him in the end...but then he's not sure if he really said that or not... Yes, he spent lots of time with Jews, Blacks and American Indians trying to prove what a big-hearted, righteous fellow he was. He finally felt used by both groups even though he thought he could get their love, they didn't love him at all, except some of the women, sexually. Yes,in the end, you can see from this book, how Marlon spent his whole life trying to get the love he so needed but couldn't get from his parents, from sexual encounters with ANYONE and from championing different causes that later just used his fame to benefit their cause. Yes, the most important areas of his life, his CHILDREN, are forbidden subjects in this book. His greatest failure in life and he couldn't own up to it. I guess even the great must keep up the image, even to themselves.Read full review
I found this book very interesting to read. We get to see Brando as he was - Human. A man with faults and many talents. In this book, Marlon Brando tells us about the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of his life. An interesting note: I had a great-uncle (Richard Williams) who was an extra on the Film - "On The Waterfront," which was filmed in Hoboken, NJ. My uncle had worked on the docks and was asked to drive a forklift in a scene. My uncle was a very kind-hearted, meak natured man. He had always told my family that Marlon Brando was very kind to him on the shoot. I found this quite interesting as I read in the book where Brando always tried to befriend and protect the meak & mild people around him in his life. An excellent read!
I´m only a couple of chapters along in the book but thoroughly enjoy it. It gives me the feeling that I understand Marlon Brando much more now and makes me enjoy his movies even more. If this is the outcome of waiting centuries before shedding light onto your personal life then it should be the course for many more people who start writing their autobiographies! We´ve never had the "right" to know about his personal life but some questions get answered the more you read along. What I enjoy mostly is that I get to laugh out loud at times because Robert Lindsey makes it so easy for us to envision Marlon Brando. An excellent treat - if you´ve never read and autobiography then this one should make it easy for you to enjoy the genre!
This book features awesome photos of Marlon Brando and is fun and easy to read.
